Today a new next door neighbor was found. It's a Galaxy... yes a GALAXY that's been undetected!

On a related note, there is even an entire portion of our own galaxy that we can't see by optical telescopes because it lies on the other side of the dust, gas, and stars that make up the center of our galaxy, or even the rest of the universe beyond it (i.e., the center of our galaxy prevents us from seeing past it). This is called the "Zone of Avoidance".

Telescopes that use wavelengths other than visible light (such as infrared and radio telescopes) have been used to discover what is hidden behind the center of our own galaxy, but even then, there is still about 10% of the universe we can't see even with these telescopes that is blocked from our view by other stars in our galaxy.
