This is what I see in the writing. I could be way off but, I will see if I can do some research on the initials for you.

Has to be Abraham Lincoln. Right era, right face, right place.

R.A.B. could be the artist.

I could be wrong, but it looks like maybe a young Abe Lincoln

Good job, turned out better than mine. I din;t know how to contrast it to make it sharper.

I think 18 would be a bit young for this particular fellow. He has quite a few wrinkles. Would you say in your opinion if that name would be Hoval? I tried to search ancestry.com for that name but returned no direct hits.

Definitely not Abe folks.

I have an ancestry account and would be more than willing to help. Though I have found it could take literally forever before you get a hit on a pic.

It does take a while sometimes. But its gotta be worth a try.

I agree it is not Abe. He was skinnier in the face, and at the age this gentleman appears to be, he should be leaner.

U2U me if you want to try Ancestory.

I am fascinated by this photograph and would love to learn the history of the man posing.
You might want to contact this web site to have it posted there......
I am sorry if this is not within the T&C but this site has thousands of very old pics and if you want an answer you will find it there.

That is a very nice picture and it always makes me wonder what became of people like the fellow in the picture.
Here is the Civil war section.

On the contrary looking at it again i do believe you are correct about R A B been the lower inscription the upper inscription is faded and may say something along the lines of Hoval, Foral, loral, foval, Loval, moral, Ford. Not getting any sort of results in advanced search for any of these nor R A B

The image looks so very familiar it's driving me a little crazy. At first I thought Andrew Johnson, but after looking at a few photos I think that's wrong.

Something about that chinstrap beard has me wanting to call him Olson.

I'll keep thinking about it & looking around.

Good Luck!!!

Ted,
You're right with regards the 1 (?) / 8 ... it's something of *slash* 8, that's for sure.

I'll have to photo it under better lighting, but it sure does seem to be 1 / 8

Still haven't been able to discern the 'artist's signage', though.

Sa - something, I believe.

I had the same feeling that I've seen this picture somewhere before. Maybe just something similar that I vaguely remember.

I imagine the below the line writing will be a date possibly 1868, 1818?

Is it possible that the top word is O'neal or Jonah? These tired eyes are going to have to take a break and come back.

Going from the period of clothes style the date would surely be 1878?

I swear I see a squiggly line around that (1) though.

If you're pretty sure this is someone from the Gettysburg area, you might try The Adams County Historical Society

I have, to no avail.

here's a slightly better shot of the signage on the back...

it's not 'something *slash* 8'

it's 68

as for the artists name ... perhaps S a something something L (?)

Wow, that is completely different than what I was seeing thank you. Something I do on my old family photos is to use the manual setting on my camera and darken it right there until the letters pop out. It has helped me on several occasions. If you are able to try this, give it a shot. You might be surprised how much this helps.

That's another great idea. The local historical society has contacts to plenty of people who might recognize this guys family line.
