Hi All,

I was just reading an MSN article on the Paralympics advert on Channel 4 (UK). The article can be found
here, it is very short and sweet but what gets me is the wording chosen, it is as follows...

Forget everything you thought you knew about strength.

Forget everything you thought you knew about humans.

It’s time to do battle.

Meet the superhumans

Now, this confuses me on 2 levels...to me, writing "Forget everything you knew about humans" tells me that...

1. The Paralympians are not classed as "human"

or

2. Are they implying "Aliens" of some sort will show face i.e. will they present themselves during the olympicsetc?

The advert for the Paralympic Games is below

Meet the superhumans is the brilliant new advert for Channel 4’s Paralympics coverage.

The hard-hitting advert depicts scenes of people being injured in explosions while on army duty, a huge car crash and an ultrasound of a baby with birth defects.

The video also shows footage of members of the Team GB athletics, swimming and basketball teams in action.

The song lyrics also raise a few questions...

Talks about conciseness and the new generation not believing in fables anymore...

Maybe someone can post the lyrics if they can find out the name of the song.

What goes on?
Rollin stones of the rap game not braggin
Lips bigger than jagger, not saggin
Spell it backwards
I'm a leave it at that...

That ain't got nothin to do with rap
Check the facts expose those cats
Who pose as heros and take advantage of blacks
Your governments gangster so cut the crap
A war goin on so where you at?

Fight the power comes great responsiblity
F the police but whos stoppin you from killin me?
Disasters, fiascos over a loop by pe
If it's an I instead of we
Believin tv
Spittin riches, bitches, and this new thing about snitches
Watch them asses move the masses switches
System dissed them but barely missed her
My soul intention to save my brothers and sisters

Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that

Screamin gangsta 20 years later
Of course endorsed while consciousness faded
New generations believing them fables
Gangster boogie on two turntables

Show no love so it's easy to hate it
Desecrated while the coroner waited
Any given sunday so where ya'll rate it?
With slavery, lynching, and them drugs infiltrated

I'm like that doll chuckie, baby
Keep comin back to live love life like I'm crazy
Keep it movin risin to the top
Doug fresh clean livin you don't stop

Revolution means change
Don't look at me strange
So I can't repeat what other rappers be sayin
You don't stand for something
You fall for anything
Harder than you think
It's a beautiful thing

Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that

So it's time to leave you a preview
So you too can review what we do
20 years in this business
How you sell sell soul, g wiz
People bear witness
Thank you for lettin us be ourself
So don't mind me if I repeat myself
These simple lines be good for your health
To keep them crime rhymes on the shelf
Live life love like you just don't care
5000 leaders never scared
Bring the noise it's the moment they fear
Get up still a beautiful idea

Get up
Throw yo hands in the air
Get up show no fear
Get up if ya'll really care
Pe 20 years
Now get up

Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up
Hard... just like that
Get up

Get up
Hard... just like that

Forget everything you thought you knew about humans.

It’s time to do battle.

I fail to see how these 2 lines help break down the stereotypical barrier "we have of the disabled"...

well it is for the paralympics. People wouldn't necessarily put disabled people in a battle or regard them as stronger than non disabled. The advert is trying to show the opposite.

I can't do anything shown in the advert so to me they are superhuman. Forget everything you thought you knew about humans because look what these people can overcome and achieve.

I think this is an amazing advert, it's strong and effective, everything it should be.

Why on earth would someone with a missing hand or leg be deemed not as strong? I'm afraid my stereotype is that a disabled person is FAR stronger than an able bodied person...

I didn't realise people still thought stereotypically like that.

If you refer to people who are severely disabled, then yes i see your point but a lot of these athletes aren't. They are not severely disabled i.e. care home residents etc.

yea that is exactly my point, these people are stronger and this is what the advert is conveying. I don't know why anyone would think the advert is trying to say they are aliens.

No i'm not saying they are aliens

I am saying that the 4 lines that come up on the screen as posted in bold in my OP could be conveying a message about what to expect during the Olympics.

Get ready for Battle

Forget Everything You Knew About Humans

Absolutely awesome commercial. Your take on it, however, is silly.

"Forget everything you know about humans" means "Until now, a human missing a limb was handicapped. Today, they are Human 2.0"

If you haven't seen Katt Williams do his bit on Tink Tink:

CAUTION: BAD LANGUAGE (it is Katt Williams, afterall).

The point of this is, used to be we thought of "them" as "handicap". That isn't so any more. Not by a long shot.

And watching that video makes me proud to be human. It is a commercial about overcoming, about challenging oneself, about becoming more than you are. And you don't have to have a disability to realize this.
