As a reformed 'scumbag' (7 years clean)... I can understand why you may feel that these people are "hell bent on ruining their lives". However, I
can tell you from experience that these people don't exactly wake up one day and say, "You know what, I think I'm going to start down a path of
self destruction and see just how low I can go".
People get better on their own terms and time frame, not yours. People with a mentality like yours often present yet another obstacle for these people
to try to overcome, and attitudes like yours often reinforce the negative self-image of the people you are ranting about, making it even worse.
Sometimes, all it takes for people to find their way again is that one person who can see past all the crap and realize that there is something good
left inside that just needs a little help. Someone threw me a lifeline once upon a time, maybe instead of griping about these people you could do the
same for someone else. Every kindness, no matter how small, can go a long way to building someone up so they are strong enough to get better on their
