I note the irony of a relatively prosperous Canadian, living under the protection of a relatively well functioning government (your water works your sewer works, armed gangs dont roam the streets, you have paved roads farms that are subsidized to keep them financially viable) complaining about government.

Government is 'vile'? See you in Somalia, then!

I think the kids call that 'first world problems'.

Not to mention their universal healthcare. Yes, first world problems.

President Obama: ‘If You’ve Got a Business — You Didn’t Build That. Somebody Else Made That Happen’

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back. They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Just a few quotes from President Obama's speech in Roanoke, Virginia and it speaks volumes of how that individual thinks. To me, those statements suggest we all should be so very thankful of the government, of how "they" built the infrastructure we all enjoy, and don't mind when we raise your is paying back the government, who really built your business.

What a load of garbage, the government didn't build a damn thing. It is the people, their sweat, their tears and their blood that builds a nation. It seems that those in government, from both parties, have forgotten this. Without the people, the government is nothing.

That's not AT ALL what he was talking about.

Did you even read the damn quote???

He's saying that people like CEO's, the wealthy, etc. Like to believe that they are supermen and they accomplished their success on their own or mostly on their own. What Obama is saying here is that these people would be NOWHERE without the help of others, without the labors of others, no man is an island.

You right-wingers are hard-wired to be so stupid sometimes.

Designed, facilitated, and implemented by whom?

By the people who rip them off via property tax if it was not for the people who moved there, and the business who hires people to work there would be no funds to do anything.

without the people so those few intellectual elite calling all the shots where that pot hole in front of most people homes never gets filled in so that people who work for unions can get paid 50 an hour hold a sign that says slow.

The basic which came first the chicken or the egg argument.

Wow! Just goes to show how askew Obama's world view is. He views the USA from the top down. Very disappointed. It's sad to watch the country I live upon and love slide into the swamp of socialism and redistribution of wealth...

Woah, I see this thread has grown quite a bit, been away at work (you know some of us have to pay for the rest of society.) Wonder how many stupid remarks are being thrown my way from our leftie ATS members....Oh look, one right on this very page.

All I can say is this exactly why I don't want some socialist society - I am a conservative but hey, I am more then willing to accept that other people have different views and interpretations then mine. But you lefites - its all FOR THE PEOPLE (with a hint of WE KNOW BETTER, LISTEN TO US) but sweet raptor jesus if you happen to disagree - then its your stupid, get out.....where did all the FOR THE PEOPLE go?

(and yes, this post is way off topic, but I come on and look at the last page and ZING - an insult, not unexpected and frankly doesn't other me in the least, but it should be something anyone who wants a free society should take note)

Success is timing and who you know, not what you know and how hard you work. Most companies use people then discard them and most of the company resource gains go to the stakeholders. That is the message I am getting. The message: Companies are successful because of the people that work for them not the resource holders.

It really irritates me when I hear people ranting about how "self made" America is and should be. While I agree that people need to be held accountable for their work ethic and self-interests, the government has it's place for those that no matter how hard they work, or how hard they try, can never seem to live a decent life. The point of forming a nation, such as the United States gaining liberty after the civil war, is to provide a safe place to raise your children and live your life without opression from a parent country. Going through life without acknowledging the contributions your country, mentors, and citizens have formed the base of your success, is naive and a downright wrong.

Though I'm not saying Obama is perfect, he certainly has a modern view. He is trying to push the country in a new direction, a direction designed to increase the longevity of the country and boost our image abroad. Trying to justify living in the shadow of the forefathers hundreds of years ago is insane
, almost as insane as thinking the outdated fairy tale called the bible is a good foundation for a modern country
. America needs to wake up and realize the only way to move forward is by changing the way they operate. Humanity is an open source project, living in the past only hurts the future. Live in the now! Wake up!

This is stupid, the idiot is taking credit for building infraustructure?!?! Are you kidding me?! That was built years and years ago, long before you ever became president, and guess who it was built by? The people!!!! You can't say that noone would have their own business without your "help". What a load.

These sound like the words a master tells their slaves

I just just like to point out that it was the British that first came up with the idea of packet switching and Britain was the first to make a working version of it. Like ever other invention ever made in the world, the British made or invented it.
So I am not sure why Obama is asking his slaves to be thankful for the tiny bit of government funding that was used to change the British invention slightly.

Britain was also the first that invented the www web pages too.

Obama is a trade I made with the Hawaiian Nation from a Hawaiian Punch Tournament I won over there I made highest and biggest stink pile. I made Malta King, but I had to refuse the honor to rule all Hawaii Islands and so suggest trading an Osaka Punch for an Obama Punch.

the people built this country. The government is supposed to be of the people, for the people, and by the people. Which isn't true anymore. Obama wants the people to kiss the goverments butt and his, and he just wanted to remind everybody the way it is now. As long as Americans keep voting for the party instead of the man, the government will keep getting bigger, and keep taking our rights away. Americans have to do their homework and vote for the man, not for a party.

Come on, give the guy a break.

He is just talking from his own personal experience, he wouldn't had been able to come up on his own without a little help from Ayers and Soros.

'And what do you know?': Business leaders hit back at Obama after he says the wealthy AREN'T responsible for their own success

[Obama's] unfortunate remarks over the weekend show an utter lack of understanding and appreciation for the people who take a huge personal risk and work endless hours to start a business and create jobs.'

I understand that I'm probably not going to be able to get a word in here, due to all of the brainwashed, reactionary conservative foaming at the mouth that is going to be occurring in response to the OP. However, the claim about the Internet isn't garbage. DARPA are/were government.

They're with the DoD. They developed the Internet back in the early 70s.

I agree with this speech of Obama's to the hilt. Where the Internet are concerned, Capitalism has been nothing but an unmitigated disaster. It has contributed nothing of positive value whatsoever, and has been exclusively destructive.

Any attempt to refute the above point in this thread will be recognised for what it is; Capitalist mind control, and ignored. Where the Internet is concerned, I may sadly be forced to tolerate the fact that Capitalism's advocates exist, but I will not tolerate also having your delusions rammed down my throat.

I was here. I've been using the Internet since 1994, and I know what the corporate world has done to it. I know about GoDaddy and the rest of the corporate reseller vermin, who immediately snatched my last domain when my hosting expired. They produce nothing of value, and reduce the ability of others to do so, by making domain names unaffordable, when they have no reason to be.

I'm sorry to hear that you will only listen to people who agree with you, that makes discussion pretty difficult.

I do agree that Arpanet was created by and for the DoD for miltary purposes. National defense is one thing that the government is expected to provide and just about everybody agrees with that. I am a little surprised that you feel Microsoft, Apple, Intel, etc. have only served to destroy or damage, the internet. But I do understand that you have had an unpleasant experience of some kind with businesses.

What I wonder, though, is assuming you're correct in everything you say, what does that mean? Do successful people owe their success to government? Should they be required to turn over their earnings above a certain amount to government? Or should we all just send the White House a thank you card once a year?

That douche bag is nothing but a communist and a hopeless moron in a position of power. I own two businesses now and have owned two businesses in the past...NO ONE built them but me. My own sweat, tears, money, ethic, morals, and time...I'm already taxed into oblivion because I'm trying to bump myself, my wife, and my family into the next tax bracket and become financially secure. I don't need this loser telling me I should be thankful for him and his crony douche friends building my highways...because he didn't. Some guy in a road vest and a hard hat did.

Obama is an impostor, a loser, a phony, and a real piece of chit.
