He's telling the truth, but selfish and greedy people can not see the truth.

Great socities and civilizations require a collective effort. Business owners and entrepreneurs are like chefs. While they might be the ones mixing everything together, if their vegetables are rotten or their blender is broken, then they can't make a succesful meal. The quality of the ingredients and tools are just as important as the person who combines everything.

In this case, the raw ingredients are the American people and the tools are this country's infastructure, which was created and is maintained by even more Americans. It's really about acknowledging and paying dues to the people who helped you to get where you are because in truth you can not do it on your own. Companies who don't bother to keep their office bathrooms clean are not going to retain the highest quality professionals, who are smart and help keep them successful. So remember that even the janitors play a part in making business owners successful.

edit on 14-7-2012 by MaryStillToe because: (no reason given)

By Obama and his ideals the Janitor should be making the same as the owner. He is a Communist, straight from Russia!!! If this clown is re-elected we will see how fast he tries to turn this nation into a Communist one. Yes, every hard working REAL American in the country helps build and keep it going but this is hardly an excuse for Obama and his Stalinist stance on life.

Let me express my sympathy for you for your tendencies: to blind allegiance; utilize obfuscation tactics; and, general ignorance of political and economic systems.

You seem to have lost track here, this is a phony balony thread based on taking a quote of Obama's out of context then making a fraudulent judgement about him. It is not about your idiotic personal opinions about me:

Line immediately following OPs out of context quote:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

I told you this guy was a marxist nwo plant. I guess we need to collectivize everything now. State owned companies? State mandated(forced) health care?

In his speech, Obama states that:
"Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive."

But then he decries the American entrepreneurial spirit that created America. Seriously, this is hypocrisy on a scale that I have not seen till now. The icing on the cake is that he himself is a millionaire! My God, this truly is comedy gold, as someone suggested earlier.

S&F

Nice find, OP.

This is very disturbing yet not surprising at all. He has absolutely no concept of what it takes to start and run a business. He is also a complete statist and confirmed narcissist.

I believe that Obama, like most of us, is simply speaking from his own life experiences. Everything that man has WAS indeed given to him by others; certainly his senate seat and the presidency were.

Anybody who thinks for a minute this country has a chance with four more years of this mindset is either oblivious or clearly insane IMO.

The only thing OP found is a quote that twists the meaning of Obama's speech by taking a tiny part of it out of context.

Line immediately following OP's out of context quote:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

Spoken like a person who has never owned or run their own business. Big talk from a man who seems to have everything taken care of for him throughout his life. Where did President Obama get the money for his college?

I'm glad he keeps speaking like that....more people will see him for what he truly is.

Isn't he generally correct?
I mean take for example you are a director of a business with many employee.
The employee helped it happen, so you can't take credit for it all?

The sad thing about OWS, was it was originally created by some kids at NYU to protest corruption on wall street, and their manipulation of public servants, to create the greatest income inequity in the history of our nation. It was hijacked by Soros funded Marxist/ Leninist groups. This was and old trick. You take a movement, take control of the movement using funding as a vehicle, and thus steer the movement into the direction you want to take. When the Socialists, funded indirectly by the very bankers they hate, hijacked the movement, the original message of the movement is lost, the movement itself discredited as a loony fringe movement, and the bankers throgh the vehilcle of the "usefull idoits", as Lennin loved to call them, are protected from further scrutiny, at least for the immediate future. The Tea Party has had a simular thing done to them, except in their case, they were coopted by main stream republicans to steer them towards their side of the paridigm, thus negating the threat to the Repubs power structure the Tea Party originally represented.

Sounds like Obama is describing Mitt Romney that destroyed companies that other American's put their blood, sweat and tears into when they started them from the ground up.

No, I don't think the OP's amen chorus have bothered to listen or read the entire speech, actually all they have to do is read the line immediately following OP's out of context quote:

"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

Don't make snap judgements on a quote taken from at a glance.

or in this case, out of context

The line immediately following OP's out of context quote:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

The topic of this thread is not so much what words Obama chooses as what words that OP chose to change and distort the meaning of the speech.

The line immediately following OP's out of context quote:
"The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

What a load of garbage, the government didn't build a damn thing. It is the people, their sweat, their tears and their blood that builds a nation. It seems that those in government, from both parties, have forgotten this. Without the people, the government is nothing.

Typical narrow minded right wing thinking.

Every single business that depends on transporting material could NOT EVER have succeeded if there were no roads. Who built the roads?

That's a very very basic starter for 10. I could go on and on but you get the point even if you disagree with it !!

Wow, S+F.

I knew his thinking was skewed, but I had no idea Ayer's had indoctrinated him this completely.

Very scary stuff for the leader of the free world to be thinking.

Basically what he is saying is that the government "let us" build a business or didn't forbid us from doing it. He believes all people are accountable and answer to the government. He's a dictator, a narcissist, a power monger an a control freak.

Earlier in the week he had the gall to say, "Being middle class isn't about how much money you have". Um, yes it is, moron. That's exactly what it's about according to the dictionary. This idiot redefines anything that doesn't quite flatter his horrific record as president. He can't go away soon enough...He always makes these off-the cuff comments that are totally false and inaccurate in a forum where he can't be challenged and in a setting where nobody can set the record straight.

What else can you say when a report comes out that the middle-class have lost 65% of their wealth in the last several years. How do you fix it? The same way we fixed the failing school system, lower the bar.

Most of America by actual population lives in areas quite a bit less rural then you do. In fact -- if the majority of us lived as you do, The US would be a Third world country.

Point is: In the world that makes "America" possible, 300 million people can't rely on volunteer firefighters or private roads.

Some of our founding fathers were also socialist. They were a diverse group of people that had the ability to debate their diverse viewpoints rather than argue and hold grudges. They were a group of men looking for solutions, not argueing over who said what and why.

Diversity of opinion and the ability to convey that opinion and work together are what created America.

Well i'm not american but i guess his explanation of success in business fits other countries as well.
I know a group of people which doesn't really releate to this Obamas idea. They're called freelancers.
I've been a freelance web designer since i was 17, im 21 now.
Before i started designing for money i've done a lot of projects for free since i knew i needed to reach a certain level of skill to even think about charing people. After a few years i got payed for a certain job even though i didn't ask for a payment. I've been working my ass off with graphics since i was 14 (first time i discovered graphic design and it stuck).
I can't thank anyone else for what i got today but myself. And after spending all that time improving myself to a point where i can truly call myself a high-quality web designer, i disagree with Obama 100%.
Most of freelancers don't get any help in their career. And the only thing government does for me is take a big part of my profits. I'm freakin speechless at Obama...

You keep quoting a different line to try to deflect from what Obama said.....the rabid defending of Obama seems to mess with people's comprehension skills.

This is what he said from the official transcript from the official White House website...are they lying?

look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.) If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

www.whitehouse.gov...

" If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen"

See it?? That's what he said and it's disgusting.....if you agree with him you are anti-american....

It is a collectivist word trick.....
