It looks like the Pennsylvania Secretary of State has come up with a wild scenario.

Apparently its better for a single woman with two children to "keep" a $29000 a year job as opposed to a "better paying" job of $69000 !!!!

How?

Well it must be the "lopsided" benefits that the government provides ?

Keep in mind this scenario is comparing assistance program "income" with full time job "income".

Perhaps they have found the "Welfare Cliff" ?

Breitbart story -- by William Bigelow -- 13 Jul 2012

Remember Julia, the fictional woman created by the Obama campaign to illustrate the benefits of big government? Now there is hard evidence that Julia should probably stay home and pick up her government check rather than getting a good job.

A new chart put together by Gary Alexander, Pennsylvania’s Secretary of State, shows that Julia, as a single mom with two kids in daycare, would be better off remaining in her $29,000 per year job than she would be in a $69,000 per year job because of the benefits she would obtain from the government. In the lower paying job, Julia would net $57,327 after she received her government benefits, while in the higher paying job, she would net $57,045.

This situation, where someone doesn’t gain by advancing in their career because the government disincentivizes such behavior, is called the “welfare cliff.” So the government is actually paying people not to be upwardly mobile, discouraging them from achievement and transmitting the message that there is more value in remaining dependent on the government. ... [article continues]

Real-Life "Julia" ?

I think of it this way...and I agree with point entirely BTW.....SOMEONE Voted for Carter, right? Reagan won handily, but he didn't win 100%. A good % thought Jimmy Carter was actually an effective leader at the time. Amazing huh?? Find anyone today who'd say that with a straight face.

In the test of time, Obama will get his rightful place in the line of history, despite the fog that has so many still singing his praises. I think it's as much fear of the worst of Bush repeating as it is actually LIKING what we have now.

It doesn't surprise me in the least that it's more profitable to make little than a lot. There was a very definite cut off for diminishing returns on my paychecks in trucking. Beyond a certain point my gross would keep rising at a steady clip, unphased...while tax tables had my net growing at a fraction of the same rate. I knew about how far I could drive and earn for a week before basically just backing off until the next pay period. Uncle got greedy beyond all reason otherwise.

The fact that this article talks about staying home and receiving her check at the beginning while simultaneously talking about the woman changing from a 30k to 60k a year job makes me wonder about its validity.

When it is more lucrative to sit at home or keep a lower paying job, then the government has failed.
Our system has failed.
Our country has failed.

It is akin to living in a prison by our own design.

I see that.

But it was comparing "Obama's Julia" to stay at home with "income", not the "example" in the 2nd article.

Two different "examples.......yes confusing.

The irony is that this site gives stars and flags for propagating these political agenda stories.

Let me see if I understand...

Some "nice guy" has all of sudden determined that a mother of 2 would like to live in poverty.

There is no coincidence that this is an election year and the way you win is by mudslinging your opponent.

No Republican agenda was harmed in the writing of this article.

Ummm.. The forum is U.S. Political Madness. What else would one expect to find in a forum of this name? lol..... If it makes it better, there is certainly plenty to be found from both sides of the isle down the forum.

As long as there have been "systems" there have been "gamers."

Dont marry the "baby daddy" and your check is bigger.

Dont buy a house and instead put all your cash into a BMW and your check will be bigger.

Two minimum wage jobs + assistance and you'll earn more than if you have one full time job slightly above minimum wage.

Benefits about to run out? Quick! Have another kid!

Need cash? Spend all your EBT on redeemable canned products, dump them out in the parking lot, go back in and redeem for cash.

There is no amount of reform that will stop it.

Scammers are always five steps ahead and the black market is invincible.

I'm stunned at the amounts of money being cited....
back in the 80's the welfare people were getting the equivilent of something like 12,000 a year, or 24,000, or something like that.....
I'd have to go though my old papers to find the number, maybe it was equivalent of a ten dollar an hour job....
not sure......but, well, it seems that welfare is giving away a much larger sum of money now!!!

I've heard a lot of ways to scam the system over the years and they all annoy me to know people are doing it and ripping me off as a citizen helping to pay for it all. However, life is just too short to get worked up over everything right? Besides..... I'm a peaceful bunny. I just munch my carrots and ponder life....

.....and still, I have to say, if I actually saw someone doing that? Even a peaceful bunny has a pair of butt kicking boots hidden down in the 'ol Rabbit Hole somewhere. I'd kick them up one side of the parking lot and back down the other! Wow...and I'm a peaceful bunny. Really.

Why is obama the boogeyman for everything i can barely remember even bush getting it this bad untill the end.

What about congress? Why do people on ATS still fall into the right/left trap?

ETA: And why are socialist policies seen in such a bad light here in the USA?
The country with the best standards of living in the world are full of them.

It assumes that the quality of life given by a salary of 60k is equivalent to the quality of life given by 30k plus a bunch of government subsidies. Anybody who has actually gone from working class to middle/upper middle class (or vice-versa) knows that this is a laugh.

Yeah, when my mom died, my dad had his taxes reduced. Yeah, we were able to get food stamps a few years and even some energy assistance. Guess what?

I never saw a parent. My dad was working 50 hours a week and any odd jobs he could find. That was a fantastic time with 3 teenage girls who just lost their mother and an 8 year old son.

I went from being able to have new stuff to hand me downs and wearing the same stuff for three or four years. Sure I didn't care, but guess how many fights I got into because of the people who just couldn't stop trying to bully me?

Energy assistance? You have to apply for that and hope and pray to God that you get it and live with the thoughts of having your power being shut off in the middle of winter or summer while you are.

Food stamps only cover a portion of your food needs, so there were still plenty of nights my dad or older sister went hungry so that we could eat. And I felt guilty every time they did.

So, please, tell me how my quality of life was so equal once we qualified for government assistance. Please, tell me how I was better off without my mother's income.

Tell me how you understand the nuances and actual reality of the situation just by looking at a pretty graph.

The shepherd conditions his sheep to have one point of entry/exit from the pen.

Singular Focus
One leader to point at
One terrorist mastermind
One nation above all else
One global currency
One God

To maintain control:
Two parties
Race versus race (there is only once race BTW, human)
Us versus them
My God versus Your God
Gay versus straight
Division
Polarity

The initial hoarding
Three resources - Food, water, shelter

And the best part is, we all know these things because they are in our face all the time via entertainment. TV, Music, Games, Movies

I actually know a single mother on welfare who likes to play WoW and go out to the clubs several times a month. I wish I could be that care free with my hard earned cash.......oh wait, it isn't her cash, it is everyone else who pays taxes cash.

Good post.

I understand from your point of view.

Usually, many "graphs" and "studies" only focus on one specific situation.

Yours is different from the one made by the Pennsylvania Secretary of State, and perhaps more "common".

You do know, this country is in a Financial crisis, right? Second, you do know The Government cant be reasonable, when it comes to spending Taxpayers dollars, right? We are talking BAD social programs, that help no one but those who are in it to scam. Don't get me started on illegals, who are crippling the system.

The "social" policies here include way too much "built in" administrative corruption.
(fraud, theft, "special" contracting, too many high salaries with light work loads, etc etc)

Take that out of the picture and maybe it ain't as bad.

Practically every country is now. And I really hate the general view that people have here that everyone is out to cheat the system.
As some one who in his childhood had to watch his mum struggle and fight tooth and nail just so we weren't sleeping on the street every night. I know that its not like that at all for the majority. Those were bad times and the fact that the media and politicians only ever publicize the people who do game the system to just make the headlines or use it as a tool to promote there own agendas. It really hurts the people who need it.
It took awhile for me to understand and get over the 'shame' of being poor.

Even now with this article and the OP.. Probably not intentionally, but throwing out big numbers like that almost gives the impression that its just easy being poor.

What i do not get is why people are so oblivious to the current state of the union:

By the numbers:

70 million getting Social Security not counting SSI
70 million getting Medicare
50 million on Medicaid
45 million on Welfare
Student loans that account for 1 trillion dollars which have racked up a national debt of 15+ trillion current
Cbo projections put that at over 21 trillion within the next 4 years.

10 million have put on welfare up from the 30 million just 3 short years ago both SS and Medicare spending have doubled within the same period of time.

IT is one thing to help those who are truly in need but when people tell me that over 150 million Americans "need help" that is a load of crap.

This country can no longer afford to pay for the wants of that many people it can not which brings us to the point never before in this entire nations history are people consuming more tax revenue than they are paying.

It is ridiculous which brings us to the point of the thread Under Obama more people have "figured out" that it is more lucrative not just for single moms but 150 million Americans to be given money than earn it.

There is not a single person on entitlements that earns that money not one.
