MARINE experts are baffled by the deaths of more than 60 turtles that have washed up on Burdekin shores.
About 74 green sea turtles in total have been found either dead or struggling for life at Wunjunga Beach, south of Home Hill, since early June with James Cook University scientists confused by the mystery killer.
The green sea turtles are well nourished and almost all adult females. That eliminates the likelihood of the deaths being linked to last year’s [2011] starvation deaths after Queensland’s summer of natural disasters. Authorities are now awaiting toxicology results
