Anyone who purposesly destroys their major tourism source of revenue is stupid. Genetically inferior human beings behave with no respect for history, art, or their fellow humanity. What exactly have these muslims achieved as a race of man in the last three thousand years? What gives them the right to destroy someone else's hardwork? I feel angry when I think of all the art already destroyed in the name of religion. Feel free to go to your local Art museum and see the damaged statues and sculptures. Noses, privates, etc. hacked off in the name of religion. Religion is supposed to be a positive thing, which inspires people to appreciate and create.

I think they are just trying to achieve negative attention to themselves. I always wanted to see those pyramids. I imagine nothing will ever happen to them. After all they have been there for twelve thousand plus years.

It's all about their faith. They could care less if it brings in money, if it is against Allah's will then they will destroy it. Simple as that, and since these are from like 2000 BC it's not part of their faith (because these came way before the Koran) so they're gone.

Dear Ilovecatbinlady,

There's a pretty strong argument to be made that the French didn't do it.

This error has persisted in spite of the fact that the truth can be readily found in such common reference sources as the Encyclopedia Americana> (Danbury, CT: Grolier, 1995). vol.25, p.492-3 under "Sphinx", which states: "Over the centuries the Great Sphinx has suffered severely from weathering...Man has been responsible for additional mutilation. In 1380 A.D. the Sphinx fell victim to the iconoclastic ardor of a fanatical Muslim ruler, who caused deplorable injuries to the head. Then the figure was used as a target for the guns of the Mamluks." In the book The Egyptian Pyramids: A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 1990), p.301, the author, J.P. Lepre, adds the fact that, in addition to the 14th century damage, "The face was further disfigured by the eighteenth century A.D. ruler of Egypt, the Marmalukes [Mamluks]."

European visitors to Egypt prior to Napoleon's expedition had already discovered the vandalism to the Sphinx. In 1546, for example, when Dr. Pierre Belon explored Egypt, he visited "the great colossus." "The Sphinx," writes Leslie Greener in The Discovery Of Egypt (London : Cassell, 1966), p.38, by this time "no longer [had] the stamp of grace and beauty so admired by Abdel Latif in 1200." Greener goes on to say: "this exonerates the artillerymen of Napoleon Bonaparte, who have the popular reputation of having used the nose of the Sphinx as a target." The charge against Napoleon is particularly unjust because the French general brought with him a large group of "savants" to conduct the first scientific study of Egypt and its antiquities.

Finally, an article by Ulrich Haarmann, "Regional Sentiment in Medieval Islamic Egypt," published in the University of London's Bulletin Of The School Of Oriental And African Studies (BSOAS), vol.43 (1980) p.55-66, states that according to Makrizi, Rashidi and other medieval Arab scholars, the face of the Sphinx was vandalized in 1378 A.D. by Mohammed Sa'im al-Dahr, a "fanatical sufi of the oldest and most highly respected sufi convent of Cairo." The nose and ears are mentioned specifically as having been damaged at this time. According to one account, Haarmann states, the residents in the neighborhood of the Sphinx were so upset by the destruction that they lynched him and buried him near the great monument he ruined. (Thanks to Ann Macy Roth's article in the online Ancient Near East Digest (University of Chicago, Oriental Institute) for the information on Haarmann's article).
www.napoleon-series.org... So let's stop blaming the French and start seeing this as part of a larger pattern of Islamic religious destruction of structures.

With respect,
Charles1952

They can't do it...I haven't crossed, "see the pyramids" off my bucket list yet!

I don't believe for a minute that this is a serious threat on their part.
However, if they did, I would have no qualms about dropping a bunker buster on the Kaaba. What goes around comes around.

I seriously doubt that this is anything more than propaganda.
People are mad that the Muslim Brotherhood won the Presidency. I hope that it is the case anyway.

This could be true, although it is ambiguous.
Napoleon was said to have fired cannon at the sphinx, although concrete evidence is hard to come by.

Also the sphinx was I believe re carved and given the head of an Egyptian Pharaoh long after it was hewn from the rock.
We are talking up to 10-12 thousand BC by some theories.

Many cultures have tried to damage or change these ancient wonders-no one has managed to fully destroy them so far-but they didn't have demolition charge technology.

Today, the pyramids/sphinx could be destroyed by high explosives overnight.

I would hate for that to happen, for all our children to only see the Pyramids in books knowing they were destroyed by a hateful, closed minded group of people in our time.

This must never be allowed to happen.

Blow up all remains of the past, and we are screwed as a species, mark my words.

I hope so too,but this Ibrabim guy from the OP source seems legit-he is Egyptian.
Check his creds on the source,or wiki him.
Sadly the Saudi fanatic he speaks of who wants the pyramids destroyed is also a real person.

I need this story to be proved false soon as my blood is boiling at the very idea.
I was born on the wrong planet it seems-this one is FUBAR it seems.
Hope I am wrong.

A while back i watched this video from Walid Shubayat called Obsession. Basically it was more or less what Icke* would call fear porn. It pointed out that muslim extremists have been bombing Buddhist temples and Christian and jewish Synagouges/churches and lead into your basic "MY GOD GROUP-X IS TAKING OVER THE WORLD!" rhetoric. Now as to how factual that is, i am not sure i haven't done any research into it. Still it is no surprise that any new regime would try to destroy remnants of the old ways or societies in order to maintain a power hold. Christians did the same thing Catholicism took over the Roman empire.

It saddens my heart insurmountably to see belief in god exploited in such a wicked and destructive way.

Even if you do not believe in a god or spirits, ghosts, etc. you could agree that a loving creator would not condone this sort of action, yes? But that is another idea and debate for another thread altogether...

*i know, i know the dreaded "I" word....but, not everything he says is unabated crazy, just a lot of it.

The Muslim Brotherhood or other fanatics may want the Pyramids demolished - but the vast majority of Egyptians are keenly aware that the tourists don't come to see the grinding poverty, they come for the Pyramids and other antiquities.

This gives me a chance to share a historical fact: Some propagandists have blamed the damage to the face of the great Sphinx on Napoleon's snipers. Probably French rifles did some of the damage, but the major part of the damage was done centuries earlier when Muslim fanatics encouraged the peasants to use the Sphinx for target practice for stone-throwing, because it was "pagan".

Of course. IF "God" is real and he/she/it lets this kind of thing happen in every day life. Then may be we were created to be violent on purpose. IF we "were made in God's image" then surely he/she/it intended to make us violent and destructive by nature.

Then again like you stated. That is for another thread all the same.

Let's not forget that MB won by a very small margin. I wasn't necessarily saying it was Western propaganda it could be partisan. Let's also not forget how proud the Egyptian people are of their ancient history. Does no one remember during early stages of their revolution when rioters wanted to take advantage of the scene and loot the museums that people locked arms in a circle around buildings holding ancient artifacts? Egypt is a democracy now, the people won't go for this.

Egypt is a Democracy now? I wouldn't jump to that conclusion, quite yet.

Egypt's Higher Constitutional Court on Tuesday halted the decision by newly elected President Mohamed Morsy to call the nation's parliament back into session, an official said.

The court also "affirmed its rule to dissolve parliament and considers it invalid," said Aly Hassan, a judicial consultant affiliated with Egypt's Justice Ministry.

The ruling is the latest move in a power struggle between Morsy and the country's military rulers, who dissolved the legislature last month. (1)
