Canada's PM Stephen Harper faces revolt by scientists

www.guardian.co.uk

Canada's prime minister, Stephen Harper, faces a widening revolt by the country's leading scientists against sweeping cuts to government research labs and broadly pro-industry policies. The scientists plan to march through Ottawa in white lab coats on Tuesday in the second big protest in a month against the Harper government's science and environmental agenda.

Harper is accused of pushing through a slew of policies weakening or abolishing environmental protections – with an aim of expanding development of natural resources such as the Alberta tar sands

Indeed they are protesting at parliament hill right now, with a 'fake funeral' for the 'death of evidence'. Im glad.

The Herpe government has been stomping on scientists for awhile now. They cannot talk to the press without their materials being looked over. They are not allowed to tell us the truth (essentially). He has cut the science budget constantly, every single year as far as i know since he has been in office. Most recently with the environmental science budget cuts concealed in the c-38 budget bill (which essentially turned canada into a petrol-state, where the profit margins supercede our environment.

People are mad. And i hope this helps them become even more mad. I'm tired of this government. The lies it produces are so blatant it is hilarious to me. I cannot wait for my fellow canadian brethren to rise up. And become mad. Because we can become extremely mad.

I will admit. I did not celebrate Canada day this year. Not knowing that the budget bill was passed on that very same day, after thousands and thousands of people condemned and protested the action. I thought this was a democracy at one point in my life, but the more time goes on, the more i see logic and reason and scientific fact being thrown out the window and hitting a bus.

I love my country, i love my people. I hate my government. And i cannot wait for it to implode.

I know this very well. Harper controls it all now. There is no bringing him down easily. His majority has already been brought into question, and nothing is being done about it.

I don't know how long it will take, or how much more abuse it will take for Canadians to get it. We're too passive. Most canadians have no interest in politics, our education system and political system made absolute sure of that.

As i said, i cannot wait for their majority to implode. Else i'm leaving for Sweden (or iceland)

Make sure in the future you reference the US Gov.
Just like Canada the bureaucracy sucks. As a prior person stated, I love my country, the people, but the gov can disappear for all the use it is.

Thats a long time to let Harper and his 'minions' have his way. IMHO we need to hold massive protests, monthly to show we Won't let him decide whats good and bad for us. 2011 was the year we needed a change in leadership, and some people of this country failed to see that.

The real conspiracy theory could be, was Jack Layton induced Cancer and an early death to prevent him from taking the leadership?, or from forming a decent oppositional leadership? He came closer then he ever did then, and then just dies? He would have changed so much and I bet they just couldn't allow that to happen.

Outstanding, Mr. Harper is finally removing funding from these agenda 21 supporting scumbags. Far to many agenda driven David Suzuki worshiping "scientists" are in bed with special interest groups south of the border like the Soro's foundation. Half of these idiots do nothing but add massive red tape to a fantastic economy out west in Alberta that is currently the backbone of the economy in Canada. Now, if us Ontarian's could get Mr. Harper to remove these ugly noisy windmills that little nancy boy "Dalton Agenda 21 lap dog McGuilty" installed north of Toronto. We hate them so much we take pot shots at these monstrosities with high powered rifles on a regular basis.

Are they both there?

Seriously . . . unless it lines the pockets of cronies or supporters, Harper isn't going to bend an ear at these folks, which is how we've become a research and development wasteland over the past few decades.

In reality, it's been in steady decline since the Conservatives divested the country of the AVRO Arrow back in teh day.

Funny how things never change.

Having a "political party" like the pathetic socialist/communist NDP in today's economy would destroy Canada. Have you read the proposals that traitorous scumbag Thomas Mulcair has proposed? If that asinine union puppet and green agenda driven socialist gained power you can be guaranteed Alberta would separate from Canada; something Thomas Mulcair would need to fuel his proposed socialist welfare nanny state.

I am slightly in disagreement with these scientists

Firstly I want to say to all the Harper-haters, myself included, that Ignatieff would NOT have been any better, possibly even worse.

Now with that out the way my slight disagreement is priorities.
Sure funding is important, but they should have protested even more about having to go through a PR firm of some sort before releasing scientific findings to the public.

Just my two cents

I don't like Mulcair at all, I completely agree.
There was just something about Jack though that I found transcended the party line, like he had at least some interest in bettering the lives of Canadians and wouldn't shy away from something simply because it was bad politics, but we will never know his true policies or what actions he would take, all we know is we have Harper now who runs this country like a militarized corporation

Jack Layton had more intelligence in his little finger than Mulcair could ever hope to have. Jack was a very seasoned politician that was able to gather many differing opinions within his party to form a platform all members agreed with. He was a good man and a great leader of his party.
