Just a little background...

I was raised Baptist. I was taught not to question Religion. Well, I did.

For thirty years I no longer believed in God. I questioned everything.

Matter of fact, I think I was the first Atheist on my block. I thought I was cool.

I would intentionally say things to shock people I thought were of smaller minds.

I really felt superior. The Sheeple seemed so stupid. I was the only one who got it.

But something was missing. These Sheeple were so happy in their ignorant bliss.

I was miserable. How could this be? I figured it out. I felt like I was missing something.

So I set out to prove everything was just a myth. When I looked deeper, I found something.

I did not write this to judge anyone or their beliefs. My test is very simple. Just one question.

In the very worst moment in your life...Did you cry out to or pray to God?

Please keep your answers respectful...I am truly curious.

Thanks

I was once an atheist and I did have a moment where I called out to God.
He answered so Now I believe.
I have a feeling most atheist will lie and say that this has never happened.
I wouldn't expect honest answers from computer atheists.

Well, honest answer - not just prayed, but asked God why....

Guess if I got an answer...

While we at it, let's talk about what are you missing. Care to elaborate...

I think the point of this is that he was missing God.

Not everyone is weak reaching out to fake gods. Deal with your own weakness.

Spoken like a true computer atheist.

The problem with this question is that we've all been exposed to the concept of God and/or praying to him in crazy situations.

It's like asking if we think about wearing a jacket when it gets cold. The only ones who wouldn't are people who have never seen a jacket and/or someone who has never experienced cold weather.

I believe that most people are indoctrinated from early childhood to believe that there is a god that watches over them and should be prayed to via bedtime prayers, grace at meal time and for forgiveness at church.

After a while, a child's brain develops and they realize that their prayers aren't being answered and no one is constantly watching them. Then they come to the conclusion that they have been lied to, and there is no biblical god.

At least, that's the way it was for me. I don't believe in the biblical god, therefore religion is irrelevant.

Comparing God to a jacket isn't a good argument.
It's not like you can just point at the jacket and say " I don't believe in you ".
If you call on God in a crazy situation then you must believe in him in some form or fashion.
Meaning you are not an atheist.

Euphoric congregated energy can be about anything.

It does not have to relate to a god.

I don't pray to a God or gods. I do "meditate" to gather my thoughts and re-organize my mental state.

So depending on how you look at it, yes I pray. But I don't ask a higher power for help or guidance or free lunch, rather I spend time alone to gain mindfulness and knowledge of myself.

Well, here I was this big bad Atheist.

Yet at my worst moment of my life.

I found myself calling out to God.

I just wonder if others ever had this experience.

You're right, it doesn't have to.
But it's possible.

Sorry, I guess my analogy went over your head.

My point is, if one had never heard of God, nor seen anyone ever call to him in times of peril, they certainly wouldn't either. Just because I might think "Please God, don't let me die!" before I bungee jump doesn't mean I'm really asking for God's blessing. It's a meme. A part of our culture.

@GmoS719 - I would love if OP clears that up...

In my opinion, he was missing need to belong to group - something that Maslow has described very well in his list of human needs.

I suggest everyone to watch this video, Hitchens at his best...

they are JUST LIKE people who believe in God.

I don't believe I did cry out to God. If I did, it was to ask him why he felt it was necessary to have my mom abandon me at a young age. A loving God would not allow such a thing to happen to a small boy.

This abandonment by my mother, and/or God, has left me feeling empty my entire life.

No thanks to God if that is how he shows love to his children.

At the time, I didn't know if I believed or not. This, among with other examples, lead me to believe that there couldn't be a God. If there is a God, I do not believe in a theistic God. A prime mover, perhaps, but that is a different subject.

No, it didn't go over my head. I understand.
I just didn't think it was a good analogy.

And if it's a "meme" why do it at all? Especially if you don't believe in God.
