federal judge declared a BitTorrent lawsuit brought by Malibu Media “an extortion scheme.”

this is in US political madness because the politicians have been trying to pass legislation that would enable vast trolling of the internet, for people to demand ISPs to "monitor" and sample data for future prosecutions.

The companies have no intention of litigating, but instead demand settlements from $1,000 to $5,000, and many people settle due to the fear of embarrassment over being accused of downloading pornography. Moreover, under the U.S. Copyright Act, defendants face up to $150,000 in fines for a single copyright violation.

The suit comes a week after a federal judge declared a BitTorrent lawsuit brought by Malibu Media “an extortion scheme.”

We’ve written about the scams repeatedly, and a year ago we were aware of 130,000 IP addresses targeted.

In contrast to the Recording Industry Association of America’s much-criticized and now-abandoned litigation war against music pirates — which targeted 20,000 downloaders in six years — the movie lawsuits appear to have been designed from the start as a for-profit endeavor, not as a deterrent to piracy.

anyone who thinks that im ok because they cant prove the IP is me, well

you will now have to defend yourself in court, and that will cost you just to prove you are innocent.

pay now or goto court literally legalised extortion

To be honest, I think its likely they'll monitor such things. Maybe TPTB are behind such things?

problem is you would still required to go to court to argue that fact,
that still costs you a lawyer and a day off work,
and if you lose its $150,000 dollars,
most people pay the $1000-$5000 dollars to settle,

how much do you have to spend on a laywer?

i agree,
apple has songs for sale on the net,
where is the videos for sale on the net?

they have not invested at all to get with the program,
the sooner people realise we need to mass boycott the recording industry the better

If they ever send a letter to me, I'm going to return it with a load of dog# added to the envelope.

They're not worthy of being taken seriously.

Theres a lot going on in the uk at the moment, people get fined or pay tickets for all sorts of things because they just dont know the law or their rights.

Slightly off topic but an example.
If people put their rubbish bin out 5 minutes early they'll get a ticket (fine), they can also be ticketed for not putting it out. But they can also be fined for obstructing the sidewalk by putting the bin on it.

So, all people need to say is "putting my bin on the sidewalk would cause an obstruction" If they said that they cant hand you a ticket because its true, but people are too dumbed down to think, they just pay the ticket.

So yeah, threads like this need to be made
but we also need to show people they should not fear these scumbags, they just need to educate themselves.

Extortion is the way of the world.

A disgustingly huge chunk of all the arrests and charges handed down everyday is basically extortion when paired with a system that fosters ignorance and encourages plea deals.

What do you think taxes are?

Look at the Obamacare tax. You dont have to buy insurance. But you'll be taxed if you dont. Okay. Now try not paying that tax? Suddenly "no fines or jailtime" becomes armed IRS agents kicking in your door and dragging you into the street by your hair at 2 AM.

Every government on the face of the earth is running on extortion. Corporations are just following the leader.

Yes I am aware of what the calyx institute is doing, as I believe riseup.net are partnered with them and I keep my eye on those guys. There is even some who are making complete OS platforms for the masses witch might be good.

Privacy is no easy to achieve, even with Tor if a data flow annalist observes packets incoming and outgoing and tracked exit nods you can still be exposed.
