Silly me. I always thought that 'Roll-Your-Own' meant that you rolled your own.

When did the meaning of 'Roll-Your-Own' magically transform into 'Let-The-Stores-Machine-Roll-Em-Fer-Ya' ?

These machines have been around since 2008. The smaller discount tobacco shops survived long before these particular machines were being manufactured.

Laugh all you wish..

The connection between the ingredient in antifreeze and pg is completely laughable

I vape pg and vg and several doctors I have spoken to have informed me the paranoia is comparable to fearing eating any vegetable for fear of it having Formaldehyde in it... Which everything organic has

I feel healthier now after vaping for a couple years than I have in 20 years..

Yep... Vaping is so harmful although it is all food grade pg and vg... Nicotene being the only KNOWN harmful substance .. And that is a real stretch according to doctors.. Seeing how it is equal to caffeine...

Do your research..

Looks like these shops are misusing a loophole meant for pipe tobacco. This new law will correct that loophole. So?

The new federal law makes it harder for stores with roll-your-own cigarette machines to classify the tobacco they sell as pipe tobacco –- which is taxed at a lower rate than cigarette tobacco.

Want to smoke tobacco without paying taxes? Grow and cure your own. Problem, solution.

Better solution:
Hand-roll them yourself at home.

You took the words out of my mouth neighbour. I have been hand rolling for years now, never looked back. Ready made fags taste chemically and feel like a snooker cue in my mouth.

Why don't you just grow your own tabbacoo leaves. And grow some canabas leaves too. Then after you've dried them shred them and mix the two. That gives you a cig that not only is clean of harmful added cancer causing chemicals, but it would have the medicinal properties of the thc in the canabas which is very good for you. Not to mention you'd get a nice euphoric feeling from the bit of canabas. Plus it would be fun to do. And you'd save a ton of money on smokes.

i have better things to do with the time it takes to roll by hand.

Seriously? It akes about thirty seconds to roll a smoke!
If 30 seconds is too long in your amazingly busy life then how do you have time to write lengthy posts on ATS?

All good in your private time but I don't think it's too sensible to smoke on your lunch break...

The kind you roll by hand has been used in Norway since the 30's, and is the most popular way. And no new law will make it go away, then the government would have appr. all of Norway at theor stairs, notma good thing haha.

But hell yeah, less expensive. A 20 pack here costs aorund 12-18 dollars.

In Michigan, a pack is easily $7.50 a pack for most major brands. Around the year 2000, when Gov. Granholm added another 50cents to each pack. I could get discount store brands for around $2.50 then, and majors were around $4.50. For me, 50 cents was a 20% increase, so I began rolling my own.

Since then, there's been another 50 state tax, and then a tax on bagged tobacco, and then another... Still rollin'!

My hand-operated injector cost $4.50, and has lasted me three years. It's slow, but I've got time! A 7 ounce bag of pipe cut cost me less than 6 bucks, and a carton of tubes cost less than 3. With sales tax, I'm paying 85 cents a pack for a better tasting fresh pack of cigarettes.

NOTE: What's interesting and instructive are the number of people around me who still smoke the majors and complain about the price, but not as much as they complain about what a hassle it is to roll their own. I suppose it would detract from their texting addiction. Some people are just plain shallow, and won't be caught smoking a home-rolled around other people... you'd think they were food-stamps or something. "Homespun" jeans. These are the people who wont be making one scintilla of effort when the "rollers" are in the sights of the taxists, because it doesn't directly affect them.

I rent, but I'm working with a friend who "owns" his property to grow our own tobacco, so that's my next step. There are many people who would be better off if they just quit, if it doesn't lead to another expensive or unhealthy distraction. As for me, cigarettes are one of the major things I truly enjoy about my human experience aside from the basic food/shelter/sleep body needs. A piece of paper and a pen to express my creativity is the only "extra" I consider a need.

I'm solving my cigarette problem with an E-smoke. E-smokes vaporize liquid nicotine, so there is no combustion of paper, nor any smoke to inhale. It's simply vapour.
Big-pharma doesn't get my money anymore, nor do the tobacco companies. A "carton" of E-liquid runs me about $22, which is way cheaper than the $80 I was spending before. I no longer have a smokers cough, I don't smell like tobacco, and I can smoke my E-smoke anywhere!

I've been doing the same thing for about 4 years now!

I buy my smoke juice by the liter @100mg / ml, and cut it down to about 36mg / ml with vegetable glycerine.
Lasts me about a year at a cost of about $120.00...

When you factor in batteries, tank cartridges, switches and atomizers, I'd say it costs me about $200.00 a year.....
I love the fact that with all the flavorings available, I can make it taste like virtually anything I want. But I usually smoke it unflavored, I like the clean taste.

My current ecig model is called the "E-Power" and if there is anything better out there, I haven't found it yet, But I'm seriously in love with this thing!

I just bought a disposable one. The cost was $12.00, with tax it was $16.00! They are charging a lot of tax on those suckers here!

RYO is the way to go. I can't stand the taste of brand cigarettes. Once you jump off that wagon you'll never go back.

That being said, how do we smokers fight this kind of thing? Tobacco is legal. How is it that the government is getting away with this madness? It's getting to the point where we'll have to treat tobacco as we treat illicit drugs. We'll have to grow our own.

To brand smokers, invest in a machine, the kind with the handle, and buy bulk tobacco. You will not believe the difference.

The brand I smoke, Natural American Spirit, has no additives added to their packs, straight up tobacco! Although they clearly say "No additives in our tobacco does not mean a safe cigarette" Surely it's safer then other brands which spray chemicals onto their tobacco...

just go find a reservation(native Americans) they dont seem effected by tobacco tax hikes and i doubt they will change anything they are doing cuz the government tells them to i been getting packs of smokes for like 2.50 on tribal land and cartons for around 20 so go visit your neighbors(native Americans) loose some money in their casinos and buy some native grown tobacco to not get taxed into oblivion

That's what I do here in Canada. Every three months I drive up to a reservation and buy three months worth. I get pre-packaged cigarettes that are great, grown with no pesticides and have no additives.

OP said that there's no difference health wise. But actually there is. One of the MAIN things that caused cancer was a certain chemical that was taken out about 12 years ago. They expected cancer rates from smoking to go down sharply and they did. No national health agency wants to say this because they still want you to quit, which makes sense. But the chemicals in manufactured are some of the worst bad health producing things about cigarettes. Without pesticides, and without additives, cigarettes are way less dangerous. The nicotine is still there, you're still addicted, and nicotine is what's supposed to be the part that hurts your heart, etc., but the chemicals are very bad.

I rarely smoke store bought anymore, but when I do, I can't believe what happens: my mouth stings, and I get a headache. I'd forgotten all about smoking headaches (when I smoked too much in one day) because they disappeared when I switched.

All bs.. Do a little more research

I have been researching for a couple years now and this is all big pharma propaganda.. Basically lies.

A lot of doctors including my own even believe there is a smear campaign fronted by big pharma against e cigs.

It is hurting big pharma from selling their patches and other drugs that supposedly help you stop smoking.

SO true! I mean it's like it's at the point where NO ONE believes you CAN just quit without these things like patches, gum, etc. I quit for a whole year years ago, and it was not that hard. I only started again out of stupidity, not because I wanted a cigarette that badly. It's 4 or 5 days of crap, and then it's basically over! The patch is a JOKE, a dangerous one by the way since pure nicotine is VERY dangerous for your heart.

those tax stamps are for the "manufacturing" of the pre-packaged product.
how does that apply to loose tobacco?

citizens don't manufacture amounts in a lifetime comparable to what RJ does in a month.

you can claim such but if it were beneficial to their production/earnings routine, they would have already done it.

bars aren't happy we can brew and consume our own either, so what's your point?
what license is required for a still or home brew ??
[plenty of ppl around these parts make home brews]

heck, i make brandy in my microwave, khalua for the holidays and occasionally rum cake.
don't need any special license or "manufacturing" permit at all.

are you suggesting licensing the above activities would be acceptable in your opinion?

it most certainly is about my convenience and every other consumers as well.
please, apply that "convenience" argument to the application of the "self-check" checkouts.
don't we really need ppl working the checkouts or was "convenience/profit" more important ??

if convenience is a good enough reason for corporations to UNemploy people, than it can be equally important in our lives and no govt has the authority to restrict it.

this is about businesses having regulations applied fairly and equally under the law
oh please, could that staement be any more foolish ?
yeah ok, FAIR, that's a choice word.
show me two industries who follow the SAME rulebook.
FDA doesn't regulate oil, EPA doesn't regulate food production, ATF doesn't regulate apparel, should i go on?
[oil refinery vs gas station] [institutional standards vs cafe] [Nike vs hand-made moccasins]

so fair how ?? based on what ??
usage of resources, # of products produced, # of employees, total sales, day/yr/ratios, percent of market share, taxes collected, biggest bonuses, most family connections, what exactly?

because it is an unfair practice for other manufacturers in the industry who pay the higher fees to manufacture, not just distribute
and how well did that argument work against "manufacturers" like Build-a-Bear ??
(do you really think their licensing is the equivalent of Hasbro, Tyco or Mattel?)

i am my own manufacturer, have been for years, no license needed.
no, i said ($40g) - $40,000 (grand) for the machine to which access is now restricted, i asked.
ETA: ppl around here pay double that and more for their cars - but i'm not one of them

actually, i said ...

i have manual rollers, several of them.
have had for many years, however, i thoroughly enjoyed the convenience and time-saving bonus of having the machine do it for me.
and you obviously read it or you wouldn't quote my opinion about "convenience".

Those tax and licensing laws have been in place a long, long time.
uh, no they haven't ... i've been a smoker for more than 30yrs.
so, don't go there, you are obviously clueless.
i can still remember flying with the ability to 'reserve seating' in the smoking section.
[and on numerous commercial flights, non-1st class]

no, i'm not angry at my vendor for providing access to automation.
it is not a factory. they do not produce anything and i'm sick and tired of my time, money and convenience ending up on the proverbial chopping block.

thinking globally and acting locally is exactly how this mess developed, thanks a bunch

and if you fight for "people", then what am i ?? chopped liver?

to compare facts with someone who already "knows" is a pointless venture.
and i notice, you provide no reference for your opinion, so have at it.
i'm a believer of "to each their own" anyway.
i have no problem with you vaping but don't expect me to join or support ya.

besides, that was only one study, there are plenty more should you be interested.
however, we both consume dangerous materials, that's a fact.
why should either of us be restricted in how we choose to do so ??

do you make your own vapor at home ? if it's all natural, why not ?
if you did, should you be "regulated" by the same body who regulates (
) Dynalite ??
[that's a trick question btw, do you even know why?]

seriously ??
a question this silly (since you didn't read previous posts) really doesn't deserve an answer.
i do roll my own at home, on the road, in the car, any place and any time i need to.
my comment was about the time-saving factor involved, not the time expending already done.

fyi, i've gotten so good, i can roll out 5pks in about 1.5 hr ... can you?
however, the machine did double that in about 10 minutes ... now, perhaps that's not a big difference to you, but it is to me and a whole bunch of others or the stores wouldn't be a target

takes two hands to roll and two hands to type, are you suggesting that i should be doing something differently ??
