Seven Terror Suspects Quizzed After Gun Find

Police are continuing to question seven men held on suspicion of terror offences after firearms and other weapons were found "hidden" in a car.

They are being held on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

A force spokesman said the arrests "followed a routine stop of a vehicle by police on the M1 motorway in South Yorkshire on June 30".

The car was impounded on suspicion of having no insurance but the driver and passenger were not detained by South Yorkshire Police.

The spokesman said: "Firearms, offensive weapons and other material were later found hidden inside, prompting police to take action to trace and arrest the driver, passenger and others suspected of being involved."

Police said three men aged 23, 26 and 27 from Sparkhill, Birmingham, were arrested on Tuesday morning.

Three more suspects, a 22-year-old from Alum Rock, Birmingham, a 24-year-old from the Moseley area of the city, and a 22-year-old from Smethwick, West Midlands, were arrested on Wednesday evening.

So it seems that more of these stories are coming the more we get closer to the Olympics!!

Doesnt say whether this was a target or who the arrested were but is sure getting hairy over here with all these arrests of late.... and does mention 'terror suspects'

What do you think? Something will happen during the Olympics or not?? If so, is it more likely to be up North than South?

I wonder why they are waving the "terrorist" flag on this? Maybe the ethnicity of the people arrested?

If a firearm was found, it's more likely crime / drug related than terrorism, but hey, that doesn't make for a good story.
As for offensive weapons, a lump of 4x2 and a potato peeler will likely get you arrested for carrying offensive weapons these days!

What I don't get, is that if the car was seized for the driver having no insurance, which is typical these days, then why would they then feel the need to later search it and find "hidden" weapons? Usually it'll just get towed to a holding area and, if not claimed within a specific time, it'll be off to the crusher. They would even allow the occupants to remove anything in the car they wanted before it was seized.

You make valid points of which only the Police will be able to answer....

I only know that things are heating up over here with all this activity.

My first thought was 'gang related' too but then i re-read the line under the link and it said 'terror related'

With the Olympics coming up, they have to work the terrorist angle as much as possible, just like they did with the bus on the M6 the other day. A couple of guys picked up for criminal / drug crimes isn't going to get a second look from people in the papers, whereas a terrorist, or implied terrorist event will get better coverage.

I expect this will quietly go away, with those arrested bailed for a firearms offence and possible criminal activity, and other players released without charge. It's usually the pattern with these things, scream terrorism to get everyones attention, then quietly let it fizzle... job done, terrorism on peoples minds again.

I always enjoy the "and other material".
Like top secret stuff they had can`t be let known publicly. And just how big of a stretch is it from a being a gang to a terrorist these days?

Three men have been charged with terrorism offences after police found firearms in a car they stopped on the M1.

Jewel Uddin 26, Omar Mohammed Khan, 27, and Mohammed Hasseen, 23, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London later, West Midlands Police said.

The trio, all from Sparkhill in Birmingham, were arrested by counter-terrorism officers last Tuesday.

They were among seven men detained over three days in Birmingham, Smethwick in the West Midlands, and Dewsbury in West Yorkshire.

The four other men remain in custody, police said.

The arrests followed a routine stop of a vehicle by officers on the M1 in South Yorkshire on Saturday, June 30.

So, it seems they are being charged under the terrorism act!

Which means something was planned or being planned and being in Birmingham it could have been for like a strike at Birmingham shopping centre.....
