Russia already has ground troops in Syria according to some reports. If Brits and Frogs take on Syria ,Russia will take off its gloves.Any attack on russian military has policy use of nuclear first strike and other WMD.

NATO is being stupid if it takes a war on Syria considering that Pskov Brigade is being deployed in Syria. Also Russia has called for CSTO deployments.

Really? you know that picture looks highly suspicious, since when did the rebels or Syrians have a red and green flag and white flag with a little something in the middle?

The one with the red top band is the current government flag.
The one with the green band was apparently the flag from before the Assad's, which the "rebels" have taken up.

Shah era flag flown by Iranian opposition demonstrators.

Death knell for Syria regime as China, Russia turn on Assad

There is no place for President Bashar al-Assad in any future Syrian government, diplomats say, as Russia and China agree to transition plan

Assad is done for.
France is just acting ballsy now that it is a done deal that Assad is going. Where were they at the forefront when all the killing started?

Nope, not at all! They're going down a route which is clearly wrong for the people of the world, and they don't look like stopping. In doing this though they're waking people up faster than they've ever been woken up throughout the course of history. It's kind of like they're exposing themselves for what they truly are, and when you think of mass arrests and how fictional that whole thing has seemed to be, well as time passes it kind of looks more like a real possibility.

And even if it isn't, they're turning people against them at a huge rate, and that also includes the military that carry out their dirty work for them. And if they get sick of it, game over.

Even if the mass arrests thing was a lie and disinfo, it will have inspired many to actually think about it for real, because these people, a small group who think they're more important than the huge majority they're working against, crossed the line a long way back.

Russia is not stupid enough to start a war when its own military is in shambles. Other than few sailors and maintenance personnel, Russia does not have any brigade size men in Syria ready to fight. There are upto 100K Russian nationals in Syria in various capacities of businessmen and like.

Only country that will fight for Syria is Iran due to military pact and coreliance of the regimes.

I think it's also part of their strategy to further seperate those "allies", combat is easier 1-on-1.
By taking out Syria slowly in this fashion, the Russians, Chinese, Iranians and everyone in between have to make very tough decisions for their own well-being.

The outpost is not exactly priority 1 in the strategy, just a result of it.

So why is Russia not providing Syria with advanced SAMs and other offensive weapons? It could not even smuggle the Helicoptors which were under a legal repair status. Also, what would Russia do if Assad is killed, would it then place another man from the regime in Assad's place? Other than UN veto, Russia has done a little to help Assad crush the opposition or prop up his military strength to make NATO think over about attacking.

And this is why all these government people have to eventually fail. People are being maimed and killed in the thousands for a "strategic outpost." One day they'll have to pay for all this.

If all the government muppets were rounded up and about to be tortured and killed, and one of them said to the people who were about to kill them : "Why?! Why are you doing this?!" And the answer was "It's just a strategic thing." Then they'd finally see. Not that I want it, but if they at least imagined it... They're a very ill bunch of people.

If you were paying attention here on ATS as a member Russia also had canceled the advanced SAMs to Iran, Sryia already has the advanced SAMs that they got from Russia.

US led the way with information and intelligence and missile attacks. You provide information you are participating in the war. US is the leader of NATO, there is no way you can squirm your way out of that one.

Sorry pal, I used to think that too but Syria DOES NOT repeat DOES NOT have S-300 SAMs of any kind. Wikipedia says that they have but in truth, Syria does not posses S-300s. They have few batteries of S-200s though, some Pantsirs and few Buk-M1s.

Israel was able to fool the Pantsirs in 2007 and now Russia seems to have upgraded them so that they are not fooled again but that's about it.

Syria's better chances are with anti-ship missiles but they also do not have over the horizon radar so range effectiveness can be questionable. It might be possible that now they have OTH radar but no confirmation.

Problem I see Syrians facing is this: Once NATO attack starts, Assad's army will start defecting in droves. At that point he will only be able to count on 20% of the men he has right now. Most of the defectors will also take equiptment and full scale Libyan type civil war will be played out again. NATO will have bombing runs from the sky while Syrian rebels will do the dangerous and dirty work on the ground.

Iran will come with overt and open help and that will become the reason to attack Iran also. Russia will sit on the sidelines with a vodka bottle and at best shout abuses and give empty threats from non-prominent deputy ministers types in Moscow. Putin will make a statement here and there but will not do anything substantial. May be run around the UN to do this or that without making much difference.

Russia may fly military cargo to Syria: report
edit on 4-7-2012 by Agent_USA_Supporter because: (no reason given)

It still requires overflight permission for transit of military equipment. Regardless if it is a military or civilian charter transport aircraft it still has to declare the cargo and file a flight plan. What country is going to give them overflight permission after all the controversy surrounding the military helicopters? It all has to be above board as the last thing that Russia wants is for a transport aircraft to be asked to land for an inspection and to be embarrassed by the finding of non-declared equipment such as the Hind helicopters.

I can't see Turkey granting them overflight permission? The only route is via Iranian airspace and over Iraq. Iraqi relations with Syria are not good and Iraq voted for them to be expelled from the Arab League. No neighbouring country with Syria wants to be tarred with the brush of allowing the cargo to be freighted through their airspace. Air delivery isn't as easy as the claimed Interfax Russian military source suggests as it requires overflight permission. The easiest route is still the re-flagging of MV Alaed.
