Hidden Doggerland Underworld Uncovered in North Sea

www.bbc.co.uk

A huge area of land which was swallowed up into the North Sea thousands of years ago has been recreated and put on display by scientists.

Doggerland was an area between Northern Scotland, Denmark and the Channel Islands.

It was believed to have been home to tens of thousands of people before it disappeared underwater.

The research team is currently investigating more evidence of human behaviour, including possible human burial sites, intriguing standing stones and a mass mammoth grave.

So, although this is hardly "news", in so far as people knew there was land here before and just after the last Ice Age, the interesting thing that caught my eye was the possibility of Burial sites and Standing Stone circles, which have to be at least 7,500 years old as that is when the last of the land was swallowed by the Sea...

Interesting stuff...

Hiya Chief, already an existing thread on this (not mine). Keep this going / close it / or whatever - just thought you should know!

However, for a bit more info, here is the link to the University of St Andrews......Discovering Doggerland

Arse...

I did look, honest.....

I like this particular topic. Actual, genuine "lost civilisations" we can investigate...

Ah the wonderful search function - such a success ATS!

I totally agree, i love this topic (and generally anything history related). I also find it quite interesting in relation to whatever is going on in the Baltic Sea with that "anomaly" (pure speculation on my part).

Friends father runs a trawler out of Hull and has done all his working life - have heard various tales of things brought up by dredging that are then dropped "accidently" over the side to avoid any length of questioning or fishing restrictions from the Authorities.

Have to say, i have always questioned these tales because, frankly, fishermen love a tall tale!

Do you know how long it took for the Doggerland to become submerged. I wonder at what point people decided to leave the area, what type of flooding must have occurred or was it just a slow and steady rise of the sea?

Interesting story.

According to the Discovering Doggerland link, a slow process between 18000 BC and 5000 BC for the entire area. However, for more info, there is the email address on that link for the Professor in charge.......

When I first saw the title, I thought you were going to provide a link to some mass porn event. :-)

Still good find regarding the link.

To think were only just starting to find out how we lived thousands of years ago.

We've actually got plenty of Dogging Land around where I live.

5,000BC really isn't that long ago in the bigger scheme of things. It's really just a few centuries before Egyptian civilisation began to emerge. I believe the land was also submerged around the same time frame as the Ice Age.

It was a gradual process starting in 13,500 BC and ending in 5,500 when the last of the hills/islands was submerged.

It wasn't submerged during the Ice Age at all. Those standing stones, at their youngest, would be over 7,500 years old, but I assume they would be placed on flat land, like others we find, so the implication is they would be at a lower level, so would have submerged much earlier, meaning they could be 8, 9 or 10 thousand years old or even more.

This is quite a find. Most sites on land now would have been vandalised, stolen from, burnt down or built over, plus the dark, cold sea water helps with preservation. We could actually find evidence of a reasonably advanced Human civilisation going back many thousands of years prior to the accepted belief that civilisation started in the Near East at a much earlier date...

Well, can't say I am surprised but c'mon people! This is an actual, real scientific discovery about a possible antediluvian society or even civilisation, and yet we have barely got enough posts to make a page, whereas threads about Atlantis, or Zombies garner much more interest...

Maybe it's the way I am selling it..

Ahem...

SECRET SOCIETY LAUNCHES ZOMBIE ATTACK FROM HIDDEN UNDERSEA SETTLEMENTS OCCUPIED BY LIZARD PEOPLE FROM MU...

There we go

Interesting.. the seas around Britain are relatively shallow, the English Channel for instance averages between 45-120m (150-400ft ish). If we had the ability to actually excavate areas where we know there were people we could learn more from that dig than possibly anyother as it would not have been disturbed by human contamination.

One thing I do find absolutely bizarre is the notion that Northern France, most of England and this Doggerland was partially arid desert (up to 13,000 years ago) and cold tundra with massive glaciers in the North until the end of the ice age.. It would have been an unrecognizable world.

There was a great Time Team episode which i would encourage any people interested in this to watch:
part1: www.dailymotion.com...
part2: www.dailymotion.com...
part3: www.dailymotion.com...
part4: www.dailymotion.com...

which talked about this kind of area and how the fisherman who trawl the bottom bring up various fascinating things like Neanderthal/Mesolithic bones, but i find it fascinating that they have evidence to show the amazing types of animals we used to have in these areas, all the types of animal you would think of being in Africa today.

"interest intensified in 1931 when a commercial trawler operating near the sandbank and shipping hazard known as the Dogger Bank (from dogge, an old Dutch word for fishing boat), dragged up an elegant, barbed antler point that dated to a time when the area was a tundra. Later vessels have dragged up mammoth and lion remains"
Just think, on land connecting the UK to Holland and other parts of Europe we had these types of animals, along with Rhinos and other amazing animals that have long since disappeared from our area.

14mins 10secs into part 1 is a great section, they have bones from lions, wolly mammoths, sabre tooth cats (very rare), hyenas, hippos, elephants so many amazing things.

The #1 thing on my list if i ever become a billionaire is to try and design a way to put a huge dome over a large area of the bottom of the sea, secure it, drain all the water out and try to create a great environment to let us actually go down there and excavate the land in peace. The finds would be amazing i'm sure, genuine untouched archaeology

WOW, Freaking amazing. Could this be the true Atlantis? Have to wonder what the average temperature would have been.

This should definitely rewrite ancient history. If there are actual stone circles found, this should definitatively estaish the circle builders as the most ancient of civilizations, far far more ancient than Sumeria.

Cool, I enjoy threads like this.

My friend and I were just talking today about what secrets to our past the oceans could hold.

Interesting that it's also where that Baltic anomaly is....hmmm

Good find! I'll have to read the links provided in the morning, it's past my bedtime

Its a big deal by the fact it confirms there was a larger landmass there in the past and now its gone. It reached as far as Ireland to the West and East as far as Denmark. Plato Atlantis civilization to the west might not be that insane afterall.

Reminds me of something I seen on TV recently.

Maybe you have heard of it if not you may find it interesting: en.wikipedia.org...

Considered to be the oldest temple in the world, they think it predates Stonehenge by 6,000 years.

Through some dating technique I forget which one the oldest layer is suggested to date back to 11,000 BC.

Saw it on Nat Geo: ngm.nationalgeographic.com...
