Like many others, I believe that child abuse is no more prevalent now than 40 years ago. We do see the big cases coming to court and DNA technology means that people can get prosecuted for historical crimes. The internet seems to have made it easy for Paedophiles to communicate but also made it easier for them to be tracked.

The most common form of child abuse comes from the family or a close member from the family - that will not have changed from technology.

From my own personal experience, I know that the subject is on the TV and in the news more, encouraging victims to come forward and speak up (as did my sister many, many years after the event).

So what it is his prerogative to be the person he wants to be, as for your attitude im surprised theres a kid on the planet that isn't walking around with psychological issues brought on from being beaten.
Lets beat all of them, regularly, it doesn't hurt them at all, that kid is BREATHING, QUICK LETS BEAT IT.
Thank God anachronisms such as yourself are slowly dying out with the rest of the dinosaurs.
And who do you think you are to feel that somebody else's child needs beating?.
You know what that sound like to me?, sounds like you have issues, probably taken one too many beatings yourself.

After coming from a family where extreme violence was used for something as trivial as not folding clothes fast enough, or, spilling something, please take your attitude, and put it where the sun don't shine.

Do you whip yourself when you break the law, or, do you ask your pa to do it?

But, I'm sorry.

I can not deal with her kid the way she needs.

Best way to put it.

FFS. Of course you can't, if she's doing everything you've said. You shouldn't need to. Stop being codependent and feeling guilty, and let her take some responsibility for a change. You don't need to feel ashamed of the fact that you're not letting her move back in with you, but you should be ashamed of the fact that you're feeling guilty about it.

There's a world of difference between not hitting a kid, and not letting them walk all over you. The mother is obviously codependent in other ways, which don't have much to do with hitting him. If he's 20, let her kick him out of home, if he is giving her trouble.

A dose of real life in economic terms will soon smarten him up, and it doesn't need to involve violence. I have a brother who is a borderline sociopath; Mum's motto with him as a child was "anything for peace."

Beating isn't necessary. Refraining from codependence on the part of the parents is. There's a big difference between the two.

Child abuse most often comes from a parent or guardian being angry or upset with themselves.

So the question is, what's got all these adults so upset with their lives? Three guesses...

Statistics show something like 70,000 kids are part of the yearly sex-trade in the US alone. That is ridiculous and untrue.

Determining the actual numbers is going to be very difficult as most of it happens behind closed doors. Recently 5200 Pentagon employees where caught downloading child porn, but action only taken against a few hundred www.abovetopsecret.com... . The reason being that there are more important priorities going on. With this kind of support it is not that hard to hide. Even one of the Mods here removed a link to the latest update in this case near the end of the thread. It really does make you wonder...

Well, the "kid" is 20 so beating him is out of the question. The time for whipping kids ends at around age 12. Kids need conditioning to avoid certain things. Having them associate the sting of a switch with stealing or cussing in public or acting out is a very good thing. People who refuse to spank their kids can't love them any more than a parent who buys his child a sports car for their 16th birthday does. It's the same thing really. It is giving them things before they are ready that will likely hurt them.

I was spanked when I deserved it (and once when I didn't, but that is another story.) and it did not hurt me. I spanked my kids when they needed it and neither of them are crooks or drunks, druggies or lazy.

"Ray" needed the hell beat out of him when he was young. He forced his step sisters to be his slaves and his mother backed him up. She beat those girls so bad she ended up in jail for abuse. That was too much and she ruined those girls. They rightfully hate her now. And they do not blame Ray for being evil. They blame his mother for not disciplining Ray when he desperately needed it. The entire family look at that boy like he is God Himself. He has never been corrected for held accountable for anything. It is utterly disgusting how he is held up as the most important thing on Earth while his brother, step sisters and cousins are all completely ignored by his grandparents and everyone else.

Thanks for your information. In Australia we have something called a Mandatory Report and it is applied to all professions where anyone within the organisation must report INFORMATION that is relative to Child Abuse. Let's just say that as a former Police Officer and now a Teacher I am well acquainted with the procedure.

Just to clarify - if it is revealed that you were in receipt of information and you failed to report it - you are committing an offence. Let's just say I would always obey the law. Unfortunately I would love to tell you more but legal boundaries prevent me - it is agony and I cannot wait to speak freely. I am currently making inroads to speak with the media. I would like to believe I will change laws as I am in a very unique and complicated situation and with my life experience and academic qualifications I can see what needs to be done. Doing it ...is another challenge altogether.

Little Holly Grieg in Scotland - what has been done to her and the evidence that is available - she should have had justice several times over. I am ashamed to breathe the same air as the creatures who abused Holly. As for libel & slander - I cannot be charged with libel or slander until the truth is proven and that has yet to happen for the abusers of Holly. Do you like the way I think?

Much Peace...

I used the word: supposedly - with advanced society. It is 2012 and we should be far more advanced than we are and when it comes to how we treat Children - our own - other peoples Children - Children left in the gutter - run over by vehicles - blasted to bits in war - we have a long way to go and I sometimes wonder whether we can ever heal all the pain.

As a Teacher I always tell Students - if you don't try you have already failed. I guess the fact we are all trying to communicate within this thread means we are trying to understand an ugly, repugnant facet of humanity - which means we are on our way - no matter how far off into the distance the culmination and total healing.

Much Peace...

ALOT more abuse happened 50 years ago then it does today. Physical and sexual assault was rampant all over the place. To say its more prevalent nowadays is completely absurd.

Without looking specifically at yearly statistics over a considerable amount of time, I would assume that child abuse is not more prevalent, however, out ability to detect child abuse has improved over the last fifty years. Increased public awareness, community support and outreach, mandated reporters by licensed personnel all explain why we probably see more of it now than in previous years.

While I appreciate your comment - I leave statistics for essays of an academic level and that comes from a person with over ten years of university level study. Statistics and references are necessary for passing courses.

General conversation and personal opinion need no statistics based on my philosophy that one starving Child is one too many and one sexually abused Child is one too many. Statistics can represent a line of thought and that can be all good and fine but statistics can overshadow the actual topic subject.

Years ago abuse within the family home was regarded as ' their business' and people were encouraged to mind their own business. How can any authentic statistics be presented in an argument when people ignored what was happening? The media and information - including textbooks and reference books - are all controlled by only six people. Six CEOs of six multi national corporations control every piece of information that is blasted at you 24/7 via the newspapers, television, radio and internet. A small portion of independent publishers manage to get a variety of information to the public so that they can actually think for themselves and make up their own mind.

Child Abuse is a lot more visible with more news outlets and publications actually putting the ugliness of it all out in the public arena. We really need to work together as a global society to better protect Children - given that so many enter the world every day.

Much Peace...

Yes - I agree with your opinion. The only problem is educating people so that they are not afraid to report Child Abuse. My vision is a day when Police Stations and Community Services are absolutely overloaded with reports because that will mean people are regaining their conscience - not being afraid to step up and report and most importantly - it will show that the systems in place are fundamentally flawed and were constructed that way on purpose.

I know - due to my current predicament that people are not reporting Child Abuse because they know that the systems in place are fraught with problems. I knew this before I made two reports and I knew that I would be subjected to unfair treatment but I had no idea the system had been set up to fail. I am not walking away from Children - anyone who could walk away from any Abused Child - is beyond help.

I will make a difference and I will make change - it only takes one person to pierce the sleeping conscience of others. Others have pierced my conscience - I am taking the baton in the relay for my leg of the race.

Much Peace...

Your dedication to this cause is commendable, Amanda!

My vision is a day when Police Stations and Community Services are absolutely overloaded with reports...

I think we might be closer to this than you think. I think a significant problem continues to be the lack of response to these reports. I don't think there are enough case workers, police officers, or social workers available to properly and appropriately investigate each claim.

I don't know where you are from but in Australia DOCS (Department of Community Services) is overloaded and understaffed and as a former Police Officer they too are overloaded and understaffed. Both agencies lose staff regularly due directly to fatigue and frustration.

The governments of the globe state that they will spend money on research to work out why the problems are happening and address the....

Therein lies the problem - just train more people, train management to respect their staff and not overload them and maybe the problem can be at least maintained. This will not happen because logic is never applied in politics. So I say let's absolutely bombard the systems with reports until the systems implode and society can witness first hand the flawed system.

There are many issues that need to be addressed - but sometimes in science - making a big mess and overloading your elements means they reach a saturation level - then the scientist has to admit that the elements can take no more....

All I know is people need to return to their conscience - wake up - realise - see the truth - whatever it takes. When a society has one starving Child - something is wrong - when a society has one abused Child - something is wrong. One is still a statistic and too many - at least that's the way I see it even if others don't.

Much Peace...

As long as mental illness is stigmatized, sidelined and ignored, things like this will happen.

Your comment is very true. We also need to realise that mental illnesses such as psychopathy, sociopathy and narcissistic personality disorder are very undetectable to the unknowing - and these three types of mental illness are well represented in all manner of high profile and administration levels around the globe.

In short - you are right - mental illness needs to be stage front and centre for all the world to learn about - so that society can learn to recognise the traits of the above listed illnesses - particularly when the traits are so evidence in the people they entrust with their lives and freedom.

Much Peace...
