No we don't. When was the last time you got to vote directly on a piece of legislation?

I already answered this.

Australia is a parliamentary democracy so I know we don't vote on every piece of legislation. BUT something as big as the carbon tax which will affect EVERY Australian MUST have a mandate for, she refused to put the tax to the election instead lying her way through.

I would have liked a vote on going to war but it just doesn't happen.

Very true, something as important as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars was not put to the people I never even thought to include that.
But like I said our politicians need to get our permission before doing these sorts of things whether they be new taxes or wars.

I know there are more than 2 parties but in essence most people only vote for one of the big two, otherwise who else would you vote for the Greens?
Or what about Katter?

I vote for which ever representative I feel is most closely aligned with my beliefs. Hopefully will be The Pirate Party at the next election.

If most people aren't doing this, than we have ourselves to blame.

Well at the moment I would say that is pretty unlikely, most people in Australia are unhappy with BOTH sides of politics, I don't blame ourselves I blame the politicians we deserve better.

In fact, people are literally fighting to keep the food on the table in this country, yet Gillard has increased the pay of ALL Federal politicians. Julia Gillard earns more money than any other leader on the planet!!!!

I know we don't vote for the leader of a party but the people ALWAYS know who is the leader of a party before they are voted in and in many cases people vote for the face of the party, ie (Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, etc)

Being nothing more than figureheads for the party, I feel a lot of people overstate their importance anyway. Policies are put forth by the party and voted on by the party.

Agreed.

Here you go!!!

The "Chicken Lady" Gillard is a raving communist. Do your research and see how recent she was a member of the Communist Party. So if anything it is a Communist dictatorship controlled behind the scenes by the greens. Not facist. Wrong side of the spectrum.

I'm not sure what that is you've shown me, but yes it is true Australia is the only Western nation without a Bill of rights.

Julia Gillard deserves to be punished for her lies. However, to punish her and the Labor Party means to not vote them in again. There in lies the rub.

I could not bring myself to vote for Tony Abbott.

Our representatives no longer represent the people.

And lets not forget that Juliar Gillard IS a member of the Fabian Socialist Society and during her youth was an active communist.

Australians have far less freedom than they seem to think and, for some reason, many are eager to have even less.

OP, I agree with most of what you are saying in that being mere spectators to government decision making and action is not government of the people by the people and that we are slowly having our demaocracy is slowly being taken away from us and casting a secret ballot every 3 years does not make a democracy.

Re JG being a member of the fabian society, TA is/was a founding member of the HR Nchols society. Neither of these thing matter because the same people control the left right paradigm. Its just something they invented to the masses disunited and by keeping them fighting among themselves so they wont unite and turn on the eleite, the invisible government.

What the elite fear the most is a united little people because a united little people are bigger and stronger than the elite. The elite remember the French revolution all too well.

Thanks for your comment, and yes it is a sad state of affairs that our politics has become. We NEVER get a chance to have a say on government policies, the only chance we get is an election every 3 years but even when you get rid of them the policy is still enacted and usually supported by the next ones to come into power.
We are a democracy in all but name, and the Australian people are still happily sleeping having no clue as to what has happened to this country.
Both sides of government are united behind closed doors, they have their own agendas set out for them by the higher elitists (The USA). Completely agree about the French revolution, however I think our government has done a damn well job at disuniting us.

Yeah your right, and since Labour is subject to the Greens control have you seen their policies, they are basically communistic.

You got that right, and IMO they haven't been representing us since 9/11. Ever since then its just been plain obedience to the US, we had no say on our troops invading Afghanistan or Iraq. People who protested the invasion, eventually gave up because the government just ignored them.

There are over 100,000 thousand homeless people in Australia, and yet just a few months ago Julia Gillard decided to give the Federal government a big pay rise, so that now she earns more than any other leader on the planet!!!

When are we going to stop tolerating this and fight back?

They all lie, they're politicians. The system dictates that the most corrupt and the biggest liars will get the chance to lead the party.
They become leaders by stepping on the heads of everyone in their way. They're not necessarily the smartest but are willing to sink the lowest. Krudd was hated by his fellow Labour party, so they and Julia knifed him. It wasn't her alone.
The pity for the liberal party is that presently they only have a moron like Abbott willing to lead.
We have a choice of one pack of liars against another pack of liars.
May as well flip a coin.

Next election I suppose. But then again there are stupid morons here who actually think voting for the greens is something different after losing faith in labour. They are too stupid to see it was the greens who have Labor by the testicles and creating this situation.

My parents voted for the Greens

But heres the thing even if the Liberals booted Tony and put in someone more respectable, they would easily win the next election but then it just starts over again. More lies, more draconian laws, and it keeps on continuing...

It has to end somewhere.

G'day Crimson

Just read your OP and hope that you don't have blinkers on. Personally, I would much rather settle for J over T any day but this email I have just received seems to fit in here pretty well. Have a read if you wish. It has a go at BOTH parties. And after reading it, I am more convinced that if we end up with another minority government (no matter who is in power) then our poor country will come out worse off. So I am certain to try to encourage as many people as possible to vote for either major party so that NO COMPRIMISES have to be made with the minnows. THAT has been the REAL problem over the past few years.
So here's the email

enjoy

To Julia Gillard (Prime Minister) & Tony Abbott (Leader of the Opposition) ...

You BOTH Worry me ! ( In fact both of your Political parties worry the hell out of me !!!)

Over the last three years, I find myself becoming more and more fearful of the pair of you, and between you, you are turning this country into a place that I no longer feel at home in, or feel a part of! I watch you in parliament, and no, not just the two of you, but every politician that I see, stand up in parliament sneering at each other, and acting like children !!! (..and if you were my children, I would be ashamed of you all ... What an example to set!)

Although you would like us all to believe that you are putting the needs of this country at the forefront, NEITHER of you are doing that, you seem more interested in "one-up-manship ", in scoring off each other, & denigrating each other, to the detriment of this country & its people !!!

It seems to be all about YOU as individuals, and not about what you can DO for this country !
It is fast becoming a place that I do not recognize, as the place I always thought, was the best place in the world to be !!!

But no longer !!!

You are not listening to the people of this country !!!
And here in South Australia , your counterparts are afflicted with the same disease - is it endemic in all politicians ?

I am watching the deterioration of living standards in this country, (and according to you, on a world stage we are doing better than most countries ... REALLY ???) ... And yet the gap is widening between the "haves" and the "have-nots" .. I see our homeless on the streets, our hospitals under-funded, and understaffed, our health system is an absolute mess and a disgrace ... And yet I see multi-millions of dollars being sent off shore, in aid to other countries, before attending to this country's needs !

I see the "selling off of the farm", in large amounts, to foreign interests, (In Every State ) including water rights to foreign interests too .... And WHY...?

Especially when you go to great lengths to tell us that water is a finite resource, & supposedly, we must ALL be careful with how we use it, so that we ensure we have it for the future ?

Foreign interests "Fracking" for coal seam gas, and riding rough shod over farmers' rights to their own land, AND USING QUESTIONABLE CHEMICALS. (You don't even KNOW what chemicals they use), and possibly causing damage to the water table in the process !!!
And those foreign interests I believe, do NOT have to pay anything in royalties back to this country, for the first five years of their tenure .... IS THIS CORRECT ???

A Carbon Tax,( which you KNOW is just another tax with a "Starting Point dollar value") which will make NO appreciable difference, to carbon emissions, AT ALL!

A tax, which in spite of all your arguments FOR it, you are doing alone, when other major countries will NOT & DO NOT embrace it, or believe in it !

All that it will do for this country is put working families and small businesses behind the eight ball, .....what planet are you on, if you think that your few hundred dollars a year, will make even a scrap of difference to the effect of the carbon tax on people ?Blind Freddy can see the holes in that argument !!! Do you really think we are that dumb ???

The CONVOY OF NO CONFIDENCE was real !!! ..and I haven't spoken to even ONE person, who would not have liked to be there if they could, but the tyranny of distance and /or work was the only thing that kept them away, ( myself included ), .. and you KNOW that only a part of the convoy was actually allowed to be in front of Parliament house and ON VIEW ... the rest were streets away, unreported by the media !

For Mr Albanese to stand up in parliament, and call it "THE CONVOY OF NO CONSEQUENCE ", in his sneering tone, shows just how out of touch with the people of Australia , you really are !!!! WE WOULD HAVE ALL LIKED TO BE THERE !!!

DEFENCE ........ Because Americans are our Allies, and we support them in Wars, ......... Korea , Vietnam , Iraq , Afghanistan , ..... and you have sent our soldiers to those places, and our soldiers fought for you, and

have sent our soldiers to those places, and our soldiers fought for you, and for Australia ........ some coming home with terrible physical injuries, and some with devastating Mental Injuries as well ..... BUT WHERE ARE YOU, WHEN THEY NEED YOU ?????

Veteran's Indexation to CPI only is a disgrace ... and is something YOUR Labor party Julia, used as an election sweetener, to get the Veteran's Vote ... BUT YOU LIED (Again) ! You never had any intention of honouring your election promise to them ... and it WILL come back to bite you at the next election !!!! (And Tony, Liberals were NO BETTER, Howard had more than 10 years to "fix it " and didn't !)

Veterans are not alone, they have families, friends and supporters, who are hearti

The problem doesn't just lie with Julia Gillard, but she has definately exacerbated the problem. The problem lies with our current structure of government, BOTH sides of politics actively ignore their constituents and think we are all stupid. Well some of us are, but there are some who can see the draconian laws they are passing.
The email was absolutely wonderful, and I hope JG and TA both got to read it.

BTW, the convoy of no confidence was a disgusting event and shows just how the government thinks it is above the people, they used the police to prohibit protestors from even getting to Canberra!!

Sending Australian and Kiwi soldiers to wars created by the US is not sending our soldiers to fight for Australia but for a bunch of psychotic rich idiots! There is no honor fighting a war by invading another nation for their rich mineral contracts!

Oh well, maybe a few Aussies will see the email and do something with it. I only have a very small contact list but others may want to use it. You never know. I have been watching overseas elections and have noticed that there are numerous political parties. I am worried that even though our system leaves a lot to be desired, that if we end up with a few more smaller parties and a few self important independents then we might have to suffer a mish mash of policies thrown together by a gaggle of different groups that have able to unite to form a patchwork government. It's getting a bit late so I don't know if that actually made any sense. Hope it did. Just imagine Katter, half a dozen indies and either lab or lib to make up power then throw in a few greens and it looks more like a stale salad than a parliament. No direction, no purpose. imo just one party in govt with a set agenda that needs no negotiation. Then if that doesn't work, the people can throw em out and give the other side a go. Only problem is, the lack of long term forsight if either party is only looking at a 4 year term
