Adding larger roads, infrastructure, security... As well S.K is making a new naval base on the NK/SK border.
Is this for a possible Chinese take over if WW3 breaks out?

I think China is hedging its bets against the ROK for a possible power grab if the Kim family loses the reigns and DPRK begins to implode.

In the short term it serves under the auspice of being a humanitarian gesture by trying to breath fresh life into the North's dismal economic situation.

China is certainly playing the long game by entrenching itself regionally even if it is at the expense of neighbouring war nerves.

listen, china is NOT playing a game here. they are following a long term strategic plan.

first, you must realize north korea is a significant piece on china's chessboard. North korea is nuclear, and could be used as a proxie for limited nuclear deployment [south korea being the obvious target], without china being an obvious scapegoat. so its a BIG chesspiece.

More importantly, china is expecting the usa to further overextend its already overstreached forces and resources in support of an israeli attack against iran, also deploying, by proxie, nuclear bunker buster bombs launched by israel. usa will be the obvious scapegoat here, since we sold them the bombs.

when israel and usa get locked down in iran, china will play its north korea card. the end result will be the chinese reclaiming of tawain, and possible all of the korean penninsula, while the usa is helpless to respond.

the world will rally to end the limited deployment of nuclear weapons. but not before china comes out wayyy on top in korea and tawain.

in the same way as if Britain or the United States were to "take over" Canada for strategic purposes, yes.

China is North Korea's benefactor, they are allowed to exist in their current state, to benefit China in all forms.

North Korea is a failed nation anyway, but if it collapsed then the main claimant to the nation would be South Korea. We would see reunification along the lines of the reunification of East Germany back into Germany proper, although there are differences, notably the backwardness of everything in the North, so vast sums of money would be poured in from the West who would be glad to see North Korea go, if not for humanitarian reasons.

China would then have a border with a successful democratic nation. The business opportunities would not have escaped China’s planners, plus the potential threats of having a modern and rich nation on a border. To note that China hints that it would not be adverse to a unified Korea, so there’s no evidence that they would seek to intervene if the North collapsed.
