A very ominous connection to September 11

This morning's assassination attempt on Ahmad Zia Masood carries a direct resmblence to the assassination of his brother that happened on 9-9-01, two days before the 9-11 attacks.

On September 9, 2001 Ahmad Shah Masood was slain by an attack perpetrated by Al-Qaeda. Two days following his assassination, the world experienced the attacks of 9-11. Three years after the attacks on 9-11, Ahmad Shah Masood is still considered a political icon in the middle east. Each year Afghanistan has held a ceremony mourning the death of this icon.

This morning's news brought some very eerie resemblence to the morning of September 9, 2001. This morning, Vice-Presidential candidate Ahmad Zia Masood, the brother of Ahmad Shah Masood, was attacked in Faizabad, located in the Badakshan province. Ahmad Zia Masood had travelled to this province for a campaign rally, little did he know, he would be the target of an assassination attempt.

"Explosives planted in the road went off as the convoy in which he was traveling headed from the airport to the rally site, killing two people and injuring at least three others," local officials said.

Ahmad Zia Masood was able to escape this morning's assassination plot. When we look back on history, today's assassination plot carries almost a direct resemblence to the morning of September 9, 2001. And this close resemblence makes us wonder, "What exactly does Al-Qaeda have planned next?".

I had never heard of Massoud before seeing a documentary on him by Sebastian Junger (sp) shortly before 9/11. An incredible and forwarding thinking man who deserves to be remembered as a true patriot.

Ahmed Shah Massoud was known as the Lion of Panjshir. He was a man who prayed, hoped, dreamed, and fought for a free Afghanistan. He spent his entire adult life in service to his country and her people. Massoud was a man of peace forced into war. He was assassinated on September 9, 2001 by al-Qaeda suicide bombers who feared him more than any other man in the country.

Massoud was a fascinating dichotomy. This man who went to college to become an architect and create beautiful buildings ended up becoming so brilliant a military strategist, he is credited in large part for ending the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Nine times the Soviet Union tried to defeat Massoud in the Panjshir Valley, and nine times they were repelled.

The link below gives some background on Massoud.
