In this day and age most people should know better by now that you should lock your Wi-Fi signal. People can use your signal and perform various crimes including making threats, viewing child pornagraphy, and various other offenses including illegal downloads. If you don't protect your Wi-Fi signal, this story may motivate you to do so.

Small town police mount over-the-top SWAT raid on unsuspecting woman's home… after teenage neighbour made threats using her unprotected WiFi

Armed to the teeth, they crashed into the house like their life depended on it.
And as far as they were concerned it did - because officers in Evansville, Indiana, believed their police station was in serious danger.
But, after flinging in two stun grenades and piling into the front room, what they found was an innocent - albeit bewildered - teenage girl.
She was watching television. So much for the hot lead.

Even more embarrassingly for police though, they had been so eager to show off their decisive action they invited television cameras and the local press.
The officers were acting on postings left on online discussion forum Topix threatening violence against local police.
So they sent in the SWAT team to execute a search warrant. The only problem was the threats were probably just a prank made by someone in the same street.

Officers were filmed smashing the screen door and a window, tossing a flashbang stun grenade into the house and then a second for good measure.
Stephanie Milan, 18, was inside. She managed to stay calm because she knew her family hadn’t done anything wrong but she was still stunned.

Moments later police realised they had made a terrible mistake and Miss Milan and her grandmother Louise were released without charge.

It looks like the cops should have done a bit more investigation before they raided this lady.

After a little bit more digging, the force realised that the threats had come from a house on the same street.

I would normally assume that the police would do proper research before raiding a home with a swat team.

The moral of the story is, lock your signal or you might get swat teamed.

This is exactly what that law concerning use of deadly force on officers in Indiana is for.

What would of happened if the young lady reacted in the wrong manner, maybe panicking and running. What if it wasn't a young lady perhaps a ex-military who would react in a hostel/defensive manner to someone barging in their front door in that manner. You can guarantee the SWAT would have shot them dead. with no repercussions, just a oops sorry wrong house.

However if there was a chance that they would be legally shot at maybe they would do a little more investigative work before trying to play gun slinger/ wanna be military hard-ass on tv. Or maybe they would knock on the door to serve the warrant instead of doing an Operation-Iraqi-Freedom-style house clearing.

It does seem that the local police force cared more about the Network TV style raid than doing a proper investigation. Instead of playing FOX TV Cops, they should have done their job properly. I think calling in the TV crews was a bit overboard and shows their intentions. They were in it for the glory. I'm glad it didn't go the way y mentioned where she could have been shot for simply reacting the wrong way. Whoops wrong house, no accountability with these thugs.

Whenever they make these "mistakes" the officer in control of the swat team should be made to pay for the damage caused to property and persons. Maybe then we'd see fewer mistakes.

I'll just make a note here. You don't have to use someone elses wireless or internet in order to get someone else in trouble. Most IP's are Dynamic, meaning they change every once in awhile (usually every 5 days to a week). So you got be surfing on say 146.126.2.50 one week, and something completely different the next week..

But. IP's are recycled. So you could be surfing on a good ip one week, and then get an ip the next week that was previously used by someone downloading child porn, and you could be the possible one raided and all your computers taken. Because of a Dynamic IP address.

Its happened before. There are lots of ways to screw other people on the internet.

That is why all the stuff came up about "An IP is not a person" because its not, unless its a static IP and that person is paying for their static ip (mostly business uses static)
