I have no doubt these people have good intentions and want to get people out alive. But that simply does not make it the best idea.

Everything ive read tell me they called off the rescue temporarily to assess the situation and ensure more would not die. I cannot imagine any reason it would have been called off otherwise.

Im sure your simply convinced we're cowards who would rather let people die however. Some people just dont think.

If you continue to argue the other point after reading this, then you are a complete fool. This is nail on the head. You can't go rushing in and trying to save people immediately. What if YOU was the person to pull that rock away which causes the collapsed structure to collapse in on itself and kill every survivor?

If my loved one was under there of course the first reaction is GET THEM OUT NOW when in reality to complete a safe rescue it has to be properly thought out and executed to ensure the survival of those trapped.

Some people are so paranoid of the government that they'll believe anything. The thing is, while politicians lie, cheat and steal, they always try and look good while they are doing it. Im sure if whoever spidey is saying called off the rescue is for whatever reason found out by the public at large, they would never be re-elected if it was thought lives could have been saved otherwise.

Im really doubting his account of things, and after scouring google, i cannot see anything besides calling off for safety reasons. Im sure local caller was distraught and rightfully so. In times like that, sometimes people want someone to blame, and honestly i can see why someone would be mad at anyone calling things off, especially if their loved one is under. But as an above poster said, once your head clears, you will realize caution to be the safer route.

I believe you heard a distraught caller from the local area who had emotional links to someone under the mall.

How do they know the politicians intentions? I firmly believe he did the right thing and assessed the situation before endangering more lives, especially those trapped.

I don't remember who the individual was, or the company he owned. I just remember it is a respected company, as I stated, was involved in the Haiti earthquake rescue. I know mining rescue teams were ready to sign waivers to go in......but also, the person who was tapping yesterday has stopped, and reports are saying that person is likely dead. Professionals wanted to go in, and were not allowed. That person DIED without anyone attempting to get to him or her.....and that does not sit well in my books at all.

I hope there is a public inquiry about the entire situation, and to make things clear, I am Canadian myself and live a few hours from there....and before anyone suggests why didn't I go there, I just heard about this this afternoon.

If anything irresponsible turns out to have happened, i fully expect an inquest to be called. Im sure there will be one to find out why the building collapsed if nothing else.

Apparently a mini-earthquake? If so, why did nothing else happen but this? I suspect there will be a building contractor company up on charges very soon.

Why can't they get some mega construction vehicles or tanks and chip away at this stuff from the side? At least then there's a chance some would be saved. Aren't some of these machines strong enough that rescuer injury would be less of a concern (what a load of balogna -- this is the risk of public safety careers)? To tell people they're giving up... what a travesty.

Was the search actually called off or was it just suspended until the building stabilized? My prayers go out to all the people trapped and to their families who are distraught. What a terrible thing to happen!

i am from ontario and the only problem we have here is a whimpy ass liberal goverment but i have faith that we the people will get them out.I am so ashamed of being an Ontarian right now.Dalton McGuinty please find another job.

They were applicable because several comments were made that first responders rushed into the Pile after 9/1, and didn't let anything stop them. They were just to show that EVERY rescue, whether people want to believe it or not can be stopped.

Fair enough. It is very common for first responders to be called back, or wait for more equipment, or wait for police or fire escorts. This whole Canada v. US stuff is stupid. What they did was extremely common. Personally, I still would not stand idly by if a loved one was in there, but I agree with you that this is common practice.
