The alien starships... need to be photon powered, that is, a starship engine that sucks in light photons like a black hole, and ejects them with tremendous thrust. Once the magnetically shielded starship gets to the speed of light barrier, it simply gathers in more photons where it increases speed exponentially squared to many times the speed of light.
