Hey ATS, it has been almost 10 years since Australia's own 9/11 and the last plotter of the attacks has just been handed down his sentence. Umar Patek has been given a 20 year sentence but could leave within 15 years if given parole.

More from the article;www.news.com.au...

SURVIVORS and relatives of the 202 people killed in the 2002 Bali bombing have reacted with anger over the sentence given to the last of the plotters to face justice, saying Umar Patek should face a firing squad.
Patek, who spent almost 10 years on the run as one of South-East Asia's most wanted, was yesterday sentenced to 20 years in jail for his role in building the explosive devices used in the bombing.

He could be released within 15 years if granted parole.

I dislike the "Australias own 9/11" line but I agree that it is a ridiculous sentence considering Shapelle Corby got 20 years for smuggling the green stuff.

Don't know about others but there is a huge difference between those two crimes that resulted in the same length sentence.

When you post anything about 9/11 here or there, please have correct serial numbers, black boxes, liscenes, DNA, explosive dealers, warehouses, atttorney generals, boeing 747s, passports, train schedules, sloppy past histories, and a motive. Maybe this guy knew what he was doing. It would be a rareity.

Let me get this straight Australia arrested their version of George bush??? Nice job Australia, bad sentencing though. Was the judge who gave the sentencing named alberto Gonzalez?

Their is some small comfort to be had with the extinction of this mans life, but perhaps they see some kind of intelligence possibilities for later on.........are we even sure hes not an FBI or CIA trainee?
I am unfortunately not deeply faminiar with the details but seem to recall that intelligence services had some kind of knowledge of it beforehand as well.......

15 to 20 sounds lenient for a murder, let alone 202. i am no proponent of capital punishment but sometimes this reality makes you take a second look at your self and your position on such things.i dont know.shame

if he was captured in Pakistan, who captured him? Pakistani forces have enough of their own issues to deal with the arrest and extradition for an Indonesian terror suspect. Where the SAS involved in his capture?.. what else are our SAS doing in Pakistan??...

Yeah exactly this guy should be locked away for life, they shouldn't even consider parole, EVER!!! I feel sorry for all the family and friends though, imagine waiting ten years to get this guy locked up?

202 is nothing compared to western terrorists, or the controllers of things like the financial system which result in billions of people dying and suffering for their entire lives.
Now that stuff probably deserves the death penalty if anything.

Even then the guy who did this bombing probably spend his whole life suffering and watching his friends and family suffer/die do to the western enforced financial system. I am not saying what he did was right but he has reason to be angry at least and its not like there is much else he can do.

Why do you dislike the "Australia's own 9/11"?

Britain has its own "9/11" so what are you saying? Dead Australians don't matter? That we are all just a bunch of convicts that aren't worth scratch???

Well mate piss off if you don't like the thread, men, women and children died in this attack and your only concerned about your bloated ego..

Ummm no. I don't know how you read so much into my comment but you got me completely wrong mate.

I just don't think it needs a comparison of any kind and is it's own horrible incident.

Chill. You seem to have some anger issues.

The only reason why I said "9/11" in the title is because it was similiar to 9/11, as it was a terrorist attack by Islamic extremists against Westerners. Since the majority of those who died were Australian its become the defacto "Australia's 9/11). The media has said the same thing.

I agree though it was horrible in its own way.

Now compare that to what Schappele Corby got for supposedly spending $40k on happy weed and smuggling it into a place were it would be worth $5k

What is it with some of you? Christ... Why is it so hard for you to accept that some muslims HATE the west just because it goes against their religion.. As soon as anyone mentioned them attacking us, you're vomiting up the "What about the western terrorists blah blah" .. Get over it.

You people wouldn't know the real world if it bit you on the bum... damn armchair socialists...

this guy deserves to be locked up for life, the death penalty would make him a martyr. Let him sit there grinning like the other retarded little indonesian pile of scum. if he does get out in 15 or less, then I really hope someone necks him before he plots another massacre.

imagine them waiting 15 to 20 for him to get out, unless he makes some new friends and is brought to justice before his release.imagine him with cherry jello powder smeared on his lips,a mop on his head and a twinkle in his eye when its time for lights out

then why didnt he lash out at those directly responsible for his suffering, such as policy makers and government officials rather than 202 men women and children who probably never had any interactions with these people much less a negative one

Australia's own 9/11 - such a loose term considering 200+ killed was in fact committed on Indonesia's soil. Best description is terrorist attack of a common social place where foreign holiday makers congregate in Bali.

People responsible for his and his peoples suffering would be foreign bankers, foreign armies and things like that..

bankers are policy makers and as far as them being foreign, western military personnel can be found around the world. add to that the fact that he was captured in northern pakistan and being from indonesia which is a good distance.leads me to the conclusion he had some resources .what i am saying is he could have gone after officials, military or bankers.he did not do this for revenge, religion or justice.he did it out hatred for westerners all westerners, again men, women and children. so i do not need to understand or pity the scum .but you feel free to,have at it
