Couldn’t agree with you more, there are 4 people right now in France with a gun to their head, one of the great things about ATS is the ability to discuss current events as they are happening.

Sickening fear mongering response are not only offensive to those involved but it also distracts form the topic at hand.

you guys are right...in my attempt to mock the ones that come on here and start with " and so it begins" then only to make wild claims i have detracted from the seriousness of the situation....and failed miserable at E-sarc.

Please continue with this serious thread and except my humble apologies.

Well hopefully he's not suicidal...

Though I doubt he is, as he attempted a robbery etc. Normally that would suggest someone desperate for their own self-worth..

The French are professionals in all matters, so I'm sure they can resolve this.

cia must be bored now they do this crap for sheer kicks

Cia guy #1: hey, bob, let's activate Ahmed and see what happens.
Cia guy #2: OK, Roy. But how will we explain it to the chief?
Cia guy #1: Don't worry. He loves this stuff. He watches it like porn.

The bank is situated not far from where the police killed Mohamed Merah on 22 March. The branch director is amongst the four hostages. The hostage taker entered the bank at 10.10 am and fired one shot.

The GIPN of Bordeaux and Marseille are coming to the hostage scene.

This is happening in France, really what are you talking about.

Do you believe that every terrorist is a CIA stooge or something?

The only demand so far appears to be that he wants to negotiate the RAID unit that took down the French gunman responsible for 7 deaths earlier this year who also claimed to be Al-Qa’ida.

If this is honestly what he wants, then I can't understand what his end-game is on this one. Did they say how he was armed.. ? I assume a handgun, and not anything more substantial. So if his goal is to 'ambush' the team, he won't get very far..

I haven't heard mention of a bomb, but I seriously doubt it.. this isn't a movie. Would be easier to plan an attack instead of this, if the goal was to attack the RAID team.

Yup my thoughts exactly, I don’t know why he would actively want a elite police unit to come to the scene. I am assuming he is either a little mad or he’s got some kind of plan, either way am pretty sure we will find out eventually what his end game is.

According to police sources he demanded money from the bank but was not taken seriously and then he pulled out his arm and took them hostage.

He is speaking by telephone and is called 'Boumaza' but that needs to be confirmed

I just read on BBC news that RAID members are NOT being deployed to the scene but GIPN have been deployed and are on the scene.

Maybe his idea was to lure the RAID members there, then use a suicide vest explosion to eliminate them. My only opinion on why he would want them involved.

Honestly, they are probably going to kill him at the first opportunity, as soon as they get the idea that there isn't an external threat and he's really just alone with a gun.

If he's going to huff and puff and force special units to come to him, then I don't see him "giving up", seems he wants a show of bravado.. and I doubt the French will allow the show.

All sources indicate that it's simply a robbery gone wrong, and that he's claiming the al-Qaeda card out of desperation for special treatment. Who knows, really really doubt he wants to pull something like that off. They would know by now if he had explosives, I think.

Truth is he only has one of two ways out, he can either negotiate his surrender or he can have GIPN blow the doors and neutralise him, possibly permanently .

I'm sure you are correct. Probably just buying time by throwing the terrorist line out there.
