Comedian Stephen Colbert recently made light of multi-millionaire Mitt Romney’s efforts to portray himself as being just like average Americans, zeroing in on the Republican candidate’s investment in the elitist sport of equestrian dressage.

“Folks,” Colbert told viewers of his show, “the image of Romney as a privileged princeling ends today, because now Mitt is just your average blue-collar fan of dressage.”

As David Wallechinsky noted in his The Complete Book of the Olympics, “Until knitting is added to the Olympic program, dressage will remain the least action-packed of Olympic events.”

Dressage cost Romney $77,000 in 2010, money that was spent on the feeding and care of Ann Romney’s co-owned horse, Rafalca, which will compete in the summer Olympics. The Romneys were able to declare the expenses as a tax-deductible loss.

This amount is considerably more than what the average American household earned in 2010—$49,445, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

What can I say?

Sort of ruins any phony election image but certain to get the dressage vote.

How can Obama top this for a tax deduction?

So what? Who cares? He earned the money. He has a right to spend the money. It is none of your business.
What about Obama's vacations that cost us each and every one?
At least Romney is spending his own money and not the tax payers money.
Leave it alone. This is a loser argument.

Uh.. Do you understand what a tax deduction is?

Your entire statement is false, and foolish.

I just wonder how much money Ann Romnay writes off on the horse expenses saying it is treatment for her scoliosis. She travels all over to say horse back riding is a treatment for scoliosis. And we all know medical expenses are not taxed including plastic surgery and boob jobs.

And I did like how he said a donation to Michal Bloombergs daughters horse riding club was a religious donation. He donated the money to his own charity that used to be named after him and his wife which they call a morman charity. Then donated money to the horse riding club from there own charity. Laundry of money complete.

why is it rich people can deduct $70,000, more than the average american makes, on hay, but the average american making $40,000 a year can't find a way to deduct the $6,000-7,000 dollars in federal taxes to completely keep their whole pay check.

think how messed up that is. he can deduct $70,000 to feed his horse, but you can't deduct $6,000 needed cash to feed yourself and your family.

and to not pay taxes on maintaining your toy is an insult to everybody working hard everyday and barely keeping their head above water.

romney doesn't believe in socialism and welfare, but when other americans are paying to feed his horse, it apparently doesn't count.

I'm confused.
Are we going to disallow tax deductions for horse expenses now?
It IS a business. A prettier one then Mcdonalds. No Question.

Are we going to disallow tax deductions for car racing now? A STONGER, MANLY type deduction, but I'm pretty sure the sponsors write off the deductions.

Where are you going with this?
Colbert made a funny?
WAIT!
Did Colberts sponsors write off the ads on the show as a business expense?

Your point? Romney has too much money and should not be elected, so Obama can protect poor people.

Anything I'm missing? I have to get back to work. Hour 12 today.

Yeah, I know what a tax deduction is. The horse is a business enterprise.
There are lots of businesses in the horse industry. Maybe he will make money and maybe he will lose money. That is his concern, not anyone else's.
Sounds to me like there is a socialiast agenda here denegrating people who make their own money and spending it how they want to.
What do you want him to do? Donate all that money to the OWS losers who camp out in the streets instead of going to work? Oh that's right. Redistribute the wealth from those who work to those who don't.
How much money would we have if Obama gave up his vacations and golf games and if Michelle gave up all her personal aides?

Ridiculing working people who spend their own money is ridiculous.

Wow, you're a firecracker aren't ya?

You're complaining about a socialist distribution of wealth while endorsing $70k in tax write offs for a horse..

And it's not really HIS money if it's essentially being paid for by the tax payer, now is it?

How do you look at yourself in the mirror?

Maybe I'm confused, but I always thought that a tax deduction is not the same as a tax credit. A deduction is used to pay less taxes on monies earned and a credit is extra money coming to you, which is not earned. So, a credit would be tax payer's money and a deduction would be less paid on already earned money. Since it was money that he earned isn't it his money?

The horse is a business.
Would you disagree the barber should not get a deduction for razor blades or a tire shop getting an air compressor? It isn't the deduction that irks you, it's the amount and the person getting the deduction.
People like you just want somebody else's money in your pocket.
You want to see the wealth spread? Give your computer to a needy school and go back to pencil and paper.
Walk the walk. Don't just talk the talk.
Maybe Obummer will take you on his next taxpayer vacation as a "fellow traveler" if you ask him real nicely.

You can't really be serious unless your broke, or have a silver spoon in your mouth. ( I know a BUNCH of rish people's kid's that say "stick it to the man"
How can that already be Romney's fault?

What, Obama supporters don't own horses and take a write off? ? ?

Just Republican Romney supporters take that tax deduction?

Man this sight get's weird during election year.

And I hate both parties. I'm an equal opportunity party hater. And NO...Not Ron Paul as my only option.

I want more options.

Yes, Romney worked very hard for his fortune, considering he inherited most of it, then helped start a venture capital firm that basically bought up companies and fired people so they could make a profit. Yeah, he's a hard working fellow alright....

I find his maid interesting. You want to talk about a long commute to work.

Valerie Cravens Anae

Where she was listed.

And why is she federal income tax exempt? Is it just because her and her whole family went to BYU Brigham Young University like Romney? Mormons go figure.

And her mother Alice Anae her neighbors all seem to be LDS.
