Russia prepares to send warships to Syria

Russia has announced it is readying two warships to sail to Syria to protect Russian citizens, in a sign that it is taking precautions against a worsening of the security situation there.

War ships to Syria to "protect" Russian citizen's eh?

Maybe they are sending an armed escort to remove Saddams weapons of mass destruction which have been said to have been moved to Syria.

Who knows what the real motive is behind sending warships, but anyone knows Russia could care less about Assad or their "citizens in Syria".

Thought Russia already had a naval base in Syria, and boots already on the ground there.

One of the warships, said Mr Trukhachev, carries a 150-strong contingent of marines, in addition to 25 tanks, but he did not give details of the other ship. He made clear that the purpose of the mission would be only to evacuate Russian personnel and property from Syria.

Seems to me after years of civil strife in Syria and the killings going just how many Russian's would still be in Syria?

IT also would occur to most that Russia would have issued a warnings and told their citizen's to leave long ago.

Hmmm what is really going on in Syria?

Dunno what the deal is with links not working it's on drudge

There are multiple sources that say Russia is sending warships so that seems to be true but as to what they are doing there is pure speculation.

I tend to believe the official story this time.. Russia has a naval base there, it's one of their strongest presences in the region.. they also have nationals in Syria since it's an Allie .. we would absolutely do the very same thing.. Russia has a vested interest.. at the same time they also don't like the crap going on there.. but what can they do? .. they are speaking sternly against Syria .. but they also don't want us stepping in .. it's a very sensitive issue..

Russia has EVERY right to send it's warships in to protect it's interests in the region.. Russia isn't supporting the killing of innocent people they are trying to protect their base of power in the region and they don't want the united states doing as we normally do .. taking over the infrastructure and installing governments friendly to us .. they are being very careful.. and I can't blame them.. but I think they themselves need to step up and help prevent loss of life..

Edit:

If anything, RUSSIA should be leading the effort to end the violence in Syria.. not us..

I suspect the ships will be a cover for sending in more arms for Assad to those people who wanted reforms

They already have a Navel fleet in Syria which surely after a year of hostilities they would have all left via those ships based there at the start of last year when all other nations including Syria's neighbours asked for there nationals to leave the country, or was they the only country on the planet that never asked for its nationals to leave. they're obviously planning to send in alot of arms this time,

Russia announced that it will keep selling arms to Syria for its national defence and security.

Wednesday, Russia also said it has no intention of military intervention in Syria even though it decided to keep providing weapons to the nation, despite urges from the West to stop arming the government.

Its no big secret that Russia is doing so and now we know how they're shipping in the next "shipment" of arms, i don't see why they couldn't be bringing in more arms while pretending they're just ferrying people out of the country that actually left the country last year, could it be through fear of the ship being attacked by a sub? or just that they simply made up another poor excuse for shipping in more arms? hmm

Russia is just continuing business as usual .. We keep supplying arms to our Allies as usual .. we can't have a double standard.. .. they have an interest in the region and they are allowed to defend it the same as we are.. we would do the same for say, Israel ..

I think you're wrong, and thinking of it in the wrong way

If Syria attacked Israel the west would supply arms to Israel its allie yes without a doubt

But if the Israeli people had a revolution and called for change & reforms and was in fact shot at by the Israeli PM wanted to remain in office, we would not continue to support the Israeli government, under any circumstances and that is where we differ, we have morals and under those conditions a government has lost all legitimacy and is not fir for office, we would ask them to respect the peoples wishes for reforms and to step down, we can still be there allies and friend after a transition/newly elected government has taken office, the US/West did exactly that in all of the middle eastern nations that it has close ties with such as Tunisia & Egypt, this is the correct civilized democratic way of doing things not the Syrian 18th century backwards way of doing things, needlessly countless people are now dead because of these barbaric brainless morons

OP,

regarding the assumption/rumour that Iraqs WMD's were moved to Syria, you would have thought that -

a) Someone from Iraq would have spilled the beans about this by now

and

b) Is true, why not declare ti to the UN general assembly and get the whole world on side includign Russia for an invasion?

The fact there is no evidence of this shows it is just that, a rumour.

Yes, Russia could be preparing to exile Assad...I doubt it, as his repalcement, whoever it may be, will surely be anti russian and prowestern, not in Russias interest.

Russia is there to protect its port, it knows that that port is going to be a target by anti assad forces who will attack it if given a chance as a favour to their Western Mentors.

Saddams weapons "were moved to Syria" was reported by the major news outlets but they were more concerned with "Bush lied and people died' so it was drowned out.

Pay close attention to that one article "Syria and Lebannon" hmmmm?

It was American warships which evacuated American citizens during from Beirut during the Israel-Lebanon conflict a few years ago, but it's not an entirely implausible explanation from the Russians.

Saddam's weapons of mass destruction? Might as well just go ahead and say they are going there to extract lucky the leprechaun and his lucky charms. Because both are equally fictitious, and will never be found.
On a serious note, they have a naval base there, and they are doing nothing different than any other country would do to protect an asset.
