This is one messed up movie, but really great if this is your kind of thing.
My wife and I first went to the stage show, when it was touring.
80's rock, lots of skin-showing dancers, and a decent story made us even go see it again the next night.
So, when we heard they were making a movie version, we were waiting for it.
I have to say upfront, I hate Tom Cruise. That said, there are certain roles, where he knocks it out of the park (Interview with a Vampire, Knight &
Day, etc.).
This is definitely one of those roles.
And relative newcomer Julianne Hough (she was in Footloose, a regular pro on Dancing With the Stars, and a not unknown Country artist, along with
being Ryan Seacrest's girlfriend), is a total knockout in this. She is simply gorgeous, and no doubt after this, she'll become one hot Hollywood
property.
Russel Brand and Alec Baldwin were great as the co-owners of Bourbon Club...
Another real treat is to scan the background crowds for other celebrities (especially 80's musicians like Air Supply and Debbie Gibson...though I've
got to get the DVD eventually, and look for more).
If nothing else, the music numbers are damn good (and yes, Tom Cruise is actually a good singer, believe it or not, and that is him). To be 50 and
pull that off....wow. Can't stand him or his "religion", but he pulled this part off, so props there.
Another cameo is Constantine (American Idol, and also played the lead in the stage show of Rock of Ages). I'm glad they could work him into the film
(as he should have been the lead for the movie too). Still though, the new lead was good.
