Sorry to chime in 10 pages into the thread, I wanted to addy 2 cents regarding secret service requesting ID, now as a security business owner, and have done various jobs involving VIP's, it is standard practice to request a form of government issued photo ID, and sometimes a secondary form of ID, it is done to ensure the person who is trying to engage in contact with a VIP is who they say they are.

Body guards are grilled and tested on picking up on fake ID's and picking out differences in facial features, the secondary document is used to confirm the same address as the photo document, and both are current dated and not an expired or photo copied document.

Well, this is how I do it here in Oz.

Generally here, a minor is under 18 years of age, so for example if a student aged 14-17 holds a photo student ID then that is acceptable, and of course common sense comes into play, if a minor is a child, then obviously they won't poses ID and aren't considered a threat, and if a minor of 14-17 doesn't poses photo ID then if they are accompanied by a parent, or legal guardian then that is also acceptable as that person becomes responsible for that minor.

Generally speaking most clients I have dealt with have been fairly relaxed with fans/followers and aren't too strict regarding kids.

thanks and i appreciate your candor.
now i'm wondering if you would agree or disagree that this particular situation seems selectively discriminatory toward youth interested in attending ?

thanks for mentioning the student IDs, i forgot cause in my day if you had one of those, you were in college and needed it for campus access. kids in primary/secondary school didn't carry them.

regardless of the hypocrisy others have pointed to, something else just doesn't seem right about this.
someone else mentioned having to leave the book behind after it's purchased, does that seem odd or unusual ?

please don't misunderstand me ... here, 12yr olds and younger are often out shopping minus supervision. (not that i'm condoning it but it happens frequently) i can reasonably see one or a group of minors being excluded for no reason other than the lack of required credentials and i find that excessively harsh and potentially discriminatory.

Why couldn't she just sign a bunch of books ahead of time so her security wont be an issue and her fans rights would not be trampled?

I can't wait till this book hits PirateBay and the other torrent sites. I hope an autographed copy becomes the most pirated book of all time.

Well if you purchase a book and get it signed, then that is your property, to be made to leave it behind is pretty much theft!
To be honest, I can't see why they would require any ID from children/minors, seems the security is a bit skittish, so yes I agree with you that it is particularly discriminatory in this situation regarding children.
And I've seen packs of kids aging from 8-17 in shopping centers looking for fights and just want to cause trouble in general, but different situations need to be handled differently.

I.E looking after a popular musician who wants to sign fans t-shirts and collectables, or pose for a photo, they are generally on a time schedule so generally fans are pumped through in a queue quickly, no ID checks etc, occasionally we may spot an out of place person acting suspicious, generally just by talking to them you can gauge an intention.
There is always nut jobs that want to cause a scene, especially if there are cameras around. As I said in my first reply, most is common sense, ID checks and pat downs are always generally excessive or overkill.

Honestly that shouldn't be much of a hassle for anyone.... Two basic forms of ID.

lol the bigger problem for me?

There is NOTHING that the OBAMA's can write about that I would ever be interested in reading. I am NOT interested in SOCIALISM or that agenda.

As far as them wanting SSN and PhotoID, hmmmm, why don't they require that to enter the country ? That would mean that all illegals should leave or be forced to leave, including Mr. OBAMA, who is NOT an American Citizen.

i'm thinking you missed the part of the story where the book purchase must take place when credentials are provided, then a 4 day wait follows. After which, the "signing event" occurs where only pre-approved persons attend and take possession of their prior purchase ?

yeah, let's not go down who can be more vicious route cause there are no age or gender limits to that one.
but, since you mentioned it, groups of kids can be quite ruthless to say the least and i understand the desire to secure the environment, but i honestly wasn't looking at it from a violent vantage point.

i have a few neighbors who would be mortified to think they couldn't attend such an event.
and they are no threat, rather undocumented
minors.

besides, i doubt a group assault activity could really be foretold anyway, kids are impulsive like that.

i'm with you on this assessment even though it's FLOTUS.

most is common sense, ID checks and pat downs are always generally excessive or overkill.
unfortunately, that takes me right back to the why of it all.

*sigh*

red tape at it's most inconvenient finest.

when are people going to start trusting one another, instead of fighting with made up fears about one another.

if i said my name was something other than my passport says, would i be a liar?

i don't think so.

a lot of people call me an arsehole, but that doesn't make me one.

i'm literally sick to the point of death of this nonsense. i makes me want to die.

what is worth living for, if i have to have a piece of paper to prove i exist in the first place?

Yeah I couldn't read the linked post on my phone, but being pre approved etc is just plain rediculous, just sounds like a power trip to me, this is why I refuse to "protect" politicians and religious bodies.

And personally, we always try to make each event enjoyable and unobtrusive as possible for everyone, I'm not out to exploit "fear", these people call me to feel safe, we try to be customer service oriented in our approach and never use heavy handed tactics, common sense and a sharp mind can handle most situations amicably

it would seem that every one has forgotten the actual status of any first lady. the first lady is not an elected official, equal to in all respects the lowliest elected municipals spouse at best . equal to the average indvidual citizen of the united states of america ,granted secret service protection only as extended potus protection.

It's RATHER OBVIOUS that the Secret Service will need to do a security background on the people who will be meeting with the first lady.

Do you know how many people go to book signings?
Do you know how much money it costs for a back ground check to be done?
Do you know how much time it takes to do a background check?
Do you know how backlogged the gov't is in doing background checks?

There is no way that the secret service is going to do a background check on everyone at a book signing.
The cost of background checks can be in the thousands of dollars PER CHECK.
It takes weeks to do backgorund checks. Months to get a clearance.
There are people waiting for their checks to be done so they can go to work, etc etc I doubt that the government would waste the time on back ground checks for each and every person who wants to sign a stupid book.

Nope reading skills are just fine in fact a person only becomes "eligible" to vote when they turn 18.

Yes?

So they do not become eligible more than once since a person only turns 18 once in their lives.

Sorry nothing has been explained except the lengths some go to defend the Obama's.

This really is stupid.

I cannot believe this place allows this kind of # to go on.

I would say bring in the TSA (True Sexual Assault)

I think the SS is going about it all wrong

First have them go through a full body scan
then pull them aside and grope them
if they are under 6 or over 80 years old bring them into a back room and strip search them
if they refuse threaten them with arrest and hold them in a box until they submit

Oh wait...who want a book signed by MO anyways

Its not about finding out whether or not the people are "legal". It is about protecting the First Lady.

People just keep on trying to make something out of nothing.

And for the record, this entire thread should be pulled down as political trolling.

LOL! ATS always wanting to silence dissent against Democrats or Obama.
