Hehe it's a pretty old but rarely known trick. I also used to hide text and images messages in audio files, and you need to use spectrograph software to read it. If you do it sparsely enough, you don't even hear the background noise in the mp3 files. Some artists have done this before, such as Aphex Twin.

There was an application I had ages ago too that let you hide mesages in plain text. Unisteg.

that's a pretty neat tool also. It uses unicode characters to hide messages in plain text. You can tell it's odd however, as it looks almost leet-speakish..

Or... open the image in GIMP (open source image editing software) and then save the image again (save as) and paste the encrypted text as the image comment (in the advanced options).

Think that is cool check out NTFS streams. You can hide a file in a another file and there is no way to ever find it unless you know it is there, even if you hide a common virus AV will NOT flag it up.

It really depends who you are hiding data from. If the FBI gets your computer, they will figure out that an image holds encrypted data. It has happened more than once, and I actually remember reading an article where this very thing happened not too long ago. Really the only way that you can be sure your data won't get accessed if someone has your hard drive is to have wiped your hard drive beforehand. And even then it isn't just a straightforward process. I mean it isn't just like you hit delete. There is an actual process. This is because there will still be retrievable data on the hard drive. This is also why I would use the old tried-and-true method of simply hiding information physically, lol, because I rust it more. But I don't have anything that I need to hide anyway.

Or... you could encrypt the data using strong algorithms and a large password. If the Government had a backdoor to cracking the best encryption algorithms we would know about it because they wouldn't need to use super computers to crack certain files, and every single service on the internet which uses encryption would be completely obsolete and their manipulation of said services would be plain as day to see, and they would have cracked a multitude of such services such as the bitcoin network and other cryptographic networks which threaten the status quo.

Once the data is encrypted it can simply be hidden in images or audio files or what ever. They are just methods of making it harder to find the data, encryption is the main method of protecting the data.

I find this common on Craigslist with many pics and images.

I tried to so called "give away" and I should mention it's nothing more than a "limited version" and every image it produces has written on it "This image contains a secret file. Activate the program to remove this banner."

Completely useless... not to mention the size of the file you can hide in the image depends on the size of the image. Not very useful.
