Thank you!!

No, me and that friend haven't talked in years. I was so hurt over learning about the social programs that I did not 'qualify' for, even though I had just gave our country 8 loyal years and was in college as an honors student...

So the truth comes out, you were hurt you didn't qualify, so you resented a system that is in place for the poor and now you claim to be a republican...lol ok I understand now.

No.

I was hurt because I understood that people need assistance, I was hurt because the wrong people continue to get that kind of assistance.

And why not be hurt that I didn't qualify? I had just served 8 years active duty Marine Corps, and an honors student in college.

However, I would not have even wanted such a luxurious house and cash benefits forever. That is totally unfair.

I like threads like this because all the posters on here who constantly claim to not be Republicans all come out and slap each other on the back for supporting Republicans*

*no, disliking Republicans does not make one a Democrat, unless your mind is twisted by partisanship

This conversation for me is over, you stated how you felt and why. And you stated it again, have fun at your next republican/tea party rally.

If you qualified for these benefits you would be a Democrat but since you don't lol!!!

Pointing out the fallacy of a GOP talking point doesnt make me a Democrat..

But your constant insistence that it does belies a lot about you.

I see you do that A LOT>

I have no idea what a "GOP talking point" is, sport. You are not pointing out anything other than anyone who disagrees with you must be a Republican but you expect everyone to believe you don't vote along party lines.

You see me fight for the unalienable rights of all people a lot, and I assure you, sport, the Republicans do not do that any more than the Democrats do that, and by the way, neither do you.

You served 8 years in the military, your location says Memphis a Red/ republican state, so you think your entitled to welfare and section 8 and food stamps that are designed to help the poor and your upset that you don't qualify. So now your a Republican, so I assume you think they will help you qualify?

This is a Clear example of people voting Republican when it doesn't serve there best interests. Don't you think being in a Red state that there would be plenty of jobs? they can't really blame the Democrats can they?

Perhaps...

I honestly don't know people are not more specific in their part choice. I think a lot of people tend to claim 'independent' to avoid heat when things don't go the right way.

Like I explained earlier, I do not walk the conservative line no more than I do the democratic one. However, this country runs off of two main political parties: Republican or Democratic

People should not be looking for a magical party who suits them 100% on every issue. That's being unrealistic. I would prefer to see more people choose the one that they have the most confident in, rather than not voting at all.

I can respect the claim of 'independent'. However, I must admit that it is hard for me to do so. Maybe as a former Marine, it is hard to see the 'no-confidence-in-either- party stance. My fallen comrades certainly wouldn't appreciate the non-chalantness of the independent voter.

Tennessee is a red state, but Memphis is a blue city.

I do not feel 'entitled' to anything. I was simply saying that if the Federal gov't is going to help citizens, why would treat its veterans worse than its welfare population?

Again, republican ideology is not "No Welfare Ever"...it is "Welfare for a Time".

Senate GOP blocks Democrats' equal pay bill
WASHINGTON (AP) – Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a Democratic bill calling for equal pay in the workplace.

www.usatoday.com...

It's sad how many Republican voters apparently have no idea of what their party supports.

IMO, you should not quit studying your history, at least not until you get to the part where the Republican & Democratic parties swapped roles. Those states that fought against slavery were indeed Republican at the time, but in case you hadn't noticed, they're blue states now. The states that made up the south or Confederacy which supported legal slavery were indeed Democratic at the time, but they're red states now.

The Democrats of old, that you describe as supporting slavery and creating the KKK, are now the Republican party and vise versa. If you don't believe me, I challenge you to find and identify one member of any neo-nazi group or offshoot of the KKK that describes themselves as a member of the democratic party. I can tell you right now, it ain't gonna happen.

It's your right to vote however you want to and I respect that, but I think you have your apples and oranges mixed up.

On another note, I thank you for your military service and I have a question unrelated to the topic of your post regarding your use of the "ooo-rah" statement. I have never served in the military but I always thought that the marine slogan was "Hua" which was an acronym for "heard, understood & acknowledged," was I wrong?

OP, I just registered to say how proud of you I am.

I'm a conservative. Not one of these "well I like some conservative principles but not the fact that conservatives hate women and gays" people who've bought into the kool-aid, but a real conservative. I agree with the Republican party on most principles, if not every particular legislative act by some clown who's mainly interested in grabbing federal dollars to buy off his own constituents.

You might want to watch this guy's videos, he's totally on the ball and he comes at the issues from a highly literate and distinctly black perspective:

www.youtube.com...

After him, I'd suggest you start reading Thomas Sowell's and Walter William's syndicated columns, if you haven't done so already. I recommend them not only because they're black, but also, and perhaps primarily, because they're two of the wisest conservative scholars in the world today.

As to my own comments for you, I would give you two pieces of advice:

1. Be proud of yourself. Don't for a second let yourself be swayed by people who believe you should "know your place", and who try to get you to buy into the culture of dependency. Many have posted in this thread, sadly. It's no great thing to be dependent on others; every great achievement of humanity that has brought us up from the oceans, down from the trees, and built great cities and futures for our children, all of that has arisen through people breaking ahead of the pack and trying to achieve something special for themselves. Nothing great has ever been achieved by people focused on placating the lowest common denominator.

2. There's a philosophical phrase called "false equivalence". It's a logical fallacy that occurs when someone attempts to deceive another person by asserting that "the other party is just as bad". You've seen it thousands of times in your life; like when a drunk argues that he was right to punch a cop because the cop was using force on him to restrain him, or when a scummy celebrity argues that everyone else is just as scummy, etc. I bring it to your attention because you'll hear it CONSTANTLY.

False equivalence is often the last refuge of the corrupt. When the evil at the root of their position has been fully exposed, their final rejoinder is "okay, yeah, I'm awful, but so is everyone else!"

And you've seen it by the bucketloads in this thread. "Okay, fine, I admit the Democrats want to enslave you and keep you in chains, but hey, the Republicans aren't any better! After all, they want you to be happily married!"

In fact, that argument alone is pretty crazy, because one of the ways that Democrats try to suppress and segregate the black community is by destroying the family structure. It's a statistical fact that the prevalence of single-parent households and the lack of strong male role models (i.e., fathers) is one of several pivotal factors behind the unusually high crime rate in the African American community.

So when a Democrat - oops, I mean "an independent"! (yeah, sure) - tells you that, hey, they understand that you don't want your children to be condemned to a life of violence and suppression, and then they turn around and say "but hey, don't buy into this hype about the importance of family", just understand that they're the opposition. They're the exact same people as the plantation owners and the Democrat party officials, even if they don't realize it.

And they'll say the same type of thing about any principle or concept. No matter what you're talking about, it's rather mysterious that, to Democrats, the Republicans are always "just as bad" as the Democrats. But it's funny, I don't think I've ever heard a Republican tell someone that "the Democrats are just as bad". In fact, I'm sure I've never once heard that or seen that. Not in person, not on message boards, not in the news, not anywhere. That alone should tell you something.

So, be mindful of that fallacy and ones like it. You've come a long way, but you're not done yet. You still have things to learn, and things to realize. Anyone who tells you you've reached the finish line is just trying to keep you from going any further.

In conclusion, we're proud of you, and you should be proud of yourself. And thank you for your service.

I say if we're going to go down we might as well go down feeding our poor, and providing them with some sort of health care. Instead of bending everyone over that is not part of the top 1% in front of the big corporations.

Today's Republican party is not the same as your grandfather's republican party.

Right or Left, you decide plenty. It was idiotic for anyone to believe that freedom is defined through voting. It is idiotic to believe that rights are protected - and insanely idiotic to believe rights are government grants - through voting. Either you are going to fight for your rights or you are not, that decision has been and always be up to you. Who gets elected to office is just a distraction from that.

This is not only wrong and offensive, but stupid. Being pro-choice (freedom) is in no way even remotely similar to slavery, actually forcing people to have children (and most likely be poor) is slavery though.

See, OP, this is what I meant by false equivalence being the last refuge of the corrupt.

This guy is actually willing to rewrite all of history, and defy even simple common sense, in order to claim that "the other guys are just as bad!"

Consider: he's actually arguing that FDR, a socialist who authorized ethnic concentration camps and tried to stack the US Supreme Court because it refused to grant him unlimited powers over the federal government, was actually a Republican.

I hate FDR with a passion, but does anyone here believe that Democrats want to eject FDR from their party roles? They love the guy.

It's abject nonsense that the parties ever switched places. The same party that fought and died to end the institution of slavery is the party that now fights to allow inner city schoolchildren to attend the school of their choice via vouchers. And the same party that died to defend slavery is the same one that argues that lower income children should be locked in their state-run gladiator academies until they drop out and enter the drug trade, because african americans don't deserve any better.

The only thing that ever happened in terms of a party revolt was when 19 Democrats and 1 Republican left their parties to form the Dixiecrat party back in the 40's. You've probably heard of Strom Thurman, the one member of that group who switched parties to Republican, doing so 15+ years later in the 60's. But the rest remained Democrats until the days they died. Like, for instance, Robert Byrd.

So again, read every comment with a keen eye. These people have been lied to so consistently, and for so long, and by so many, that at this point their entire worldview is a lie. No wonder they assume everyone is just as messed up as they are...

Bottom line

1 I will never settle for the least or two evils again!

2 I will only vote when I believe in the candidate!

3 I will not vote unless I can vote none of the above.

Do you republicans who aren't paid to post believe republican government will make abortion illegal? Or will return prayer to schools? Or will stop corporate welfare? Why haven't they done so when they had the majorities? They won't because they lie to get into office.

Same thing on the left! but they only lie 50% of the time...but there almost just as guilty. (they are the lesser evil based on sponsored bills and voting records)

Both sides want us fighting over there scraps, while they pass stuff like ndaa and the next draconian bill sponsored by the right!!!!
