This blog by Ken ring
is quite interesting.
He's also persisted off chemmies in NZ by
poo-pooing the notion of
On the one hand Ken has a fairly simple messge - clouds are clouds, engines make water and clouds of water from jet engines are jsut clouds of water
from jet engines.
On the other hand Ken is a well known nut-case in New Zealand for predicting earthquakes and weather by the phase of the
moon......to much criticism and usually getting important events completely wrong
and in his writing in the article linked at the top his conclusion might be right - but some of his his actual knowledge and writing are very
Eg this section:
You see exhaust trails in high-pressured cooler air because the jets’ vapour has turned to ice. Higher pressure can be electro-statically
Earthquakes are caused by stress on the earth's electromagnetic field caused by increased solar activity. Higher-pressured air can therefore signal
the timing of earthquakes.
There have been contrails since 747's started flying above 35000 feet, around and above which you may see ice cirrus.
In your fridge ice is made when a gas undergoes high pressure from a pump. Higher-pressured skies tend to be clear and cold, whereas lower pressure
makes clouds form. Cirrus shows you the areas of higher pressure.
I'm not sure how many errors of various exist in this relatively short extract -
1/ Higher pressure can be electro-statically charged - true - and of course so can any other air, so trivial and irrelevant
2/ Earthquakes are caused by stress on the earth's electromagnetic field caused by increased solar activity. - this would be news to the scientific
community AFAIK - I can't find any other credible indication that it might be the case
3/ Higher-pressured air can therefore signal the timing of earthquakes. wow -that's a pretty big jump - but wsince any air can be "electro-statically
charged" presumably low pressure air can also signal the timing of eathquakes by this theory - which makes it pretty useless.
4/ In your fridge ice is made when a gas undergoes high pressure from a pump. No - just....no!
To be specific, ice is made when water is cooled
enough to freeze. the drop in temperature is caused by exposing it to cold temperatures created by expanding compressed gas or other working
5/ Higher-pressured skies tend to be clear and cold, whereas lower pressure makes clouds form. True.....but simplistic and misses why this tends to be
the case - high pressure upper air tends to fall, and then warm allowing moisture to dissolve so no clouds. Low pressure upper air tends to mean
lower air rises, cools, and then forms clouds.
6/ Cirrus shows you the areas of higher pressure. Actually cirrus clouds usually presage the approach of a warm front and indicate warm air rising
from lower altitudes and the moisture in it precipitating out as it rises.
so Ken has given us a real dilema here - he is a follower of pseudo-science of his own, and usually glaringly incorrect....but in this case his
conclusion - that there is no reason to fear cirrus or contrails - is quite correct
OK - now I think there's at least 6!!
