This is lovely! While the supposition has long been that the multiple overlapping images in many stone age caves served to indicate movement, the theory has finally been put to the test by animating the 'frames' as though by flickering torchlight!

Reporting in ‬ the June issue of Antiquity, archaeologist Marc Azéma of the University of Toulouse–Le Mirail in France and independent French artist Florent Rivère argued that by about‭ ‬30,000‭ ‬years ago Paleolithic artists used "animation effects" in their paintings. To render the movement, they deconstructed it in successive images.news.discovery.com...

Interesting, but less convincing than I would have expected. Who knows; only the artist themselves know.

i find it reminds me of comic book action
multiples of person or object drawn to show the action in one frame
( like a 4 legged karate dude kicking three bad guys in the head(s) in one frame)

On a sound stage a band I worked with had line drawings as a background in different colors
when I would change lighting scenes the drawing would show which ever line drawing was in the color I hit the background with...it was striking

say they threw different salts in the fire for different colors
then different colors would stand out on the wall...
