Russians probably looking to safeguard their interests in Syria, as the situation deteriorates, not engage with the internal strife ? Their naval base for instance ?

Oh, ah, that varies with the soldier plus the AMOUNT of people you choose from.As a group Americans mostly have a fear/kill reaction that is highly restrained so we don't slaughter,it's rude.We hold back a great deal when we go to war.We also like life women children and dogs.That is why you see all the videos of them being killed.It is propaganda to hurt us as a people.These deaths are a common fact of war. We are very strongly proud as people however. Just ask Germanicus. I'm more than sure he thinks I'm crazy. We will win if left alone, whatever it takes for us to do so.

Watered down export versions of Russian arms in the hands of ill trained Arab armies is sure good mostly for target practice. Especially when opposing forces are well trained and advanced tech aided, US and UK types. Do not disagree here.

Russian doctrine is surely wasteful when it comes to the lives of their common soldiers. In the battle of Kursk, Russians were the defenders while Germans the attackers. Still at the end, Russians lost 180K while Germans only 50K. Usually attack to defense ratio in losses is 3:1 or easily 2:1.

Russia needs to value its soldiers much more than it used to and still does. Russian doctrine demands too much sacrifice from its soldiers and that is not right way of fighting. 10 million Red Army soldiers dead in WWII could easily have been half that number, but for Commie way of fighting and treating soldiers like cannon fodder. That is very bad for the morale of the troops. Deny any army two things: Food and Morale and you have won 75% of the battle. In Red Army both these items were in scarce. Morale was substituted by Fear of getting shot if performing badly or retreating.

As late as 1995, in the Chechenya war, barely trained and armed conscripts were knocking door to door for food and any other help. Guess field kitchen concept is taken very lightly in the Russian doctrine.

Its possible it might be a stabalization force? If the use of west / UN forces are not acceptible maybe the use of Russian forces are? If Russia decides to not support Assad it still does not rule out the use of force by them to remove Assad and guarantee a replacement government in line with Russian interests. I would say at this point I would support a Russian intervention if it stops the bloodshed.

Iran does ahve a contingent of troops in Syria assisting the regime so I am not sure how that would play out.

I have no doubt Russia will go in and back up the Syrian government.

Syria is the major purchaser of Russian military equipment.
Russia makes a ton of money from these purchases.
If the Syrian rebels win freedom for Syria, then Russia will be out a ton of $$.

Therefore, Russia will indeed go into Syria to help the government.
The USA would then be unable to 'help' the rebels because it would be
a proxy war between the USA and Russia.

Russia will go into Syria. It's just a matter of time.

They will all be dead, no other way to play it out. They are radically trained troops on foreign soil with no way back home soon. That and with their support about to crumble they will be hunted down in the streets like the mercenaries were in Libya. You just reminded of soemthing else I saw in the news in the last week. There is a Syrian city on the Northern border with Turkey. The city fell within the buffer zone Turkey established. Syrian forces were reported heading to that area / city. This is supposedly a red line for Turkey and movemeny of Syrian forces in would result in Turkey military intervention. Another reason why Russia maybe prepping...
