The sad truth of out technological advancement was our lack of recognition that we are more than just smart apes capable of developing technology. We in first world nations have jumped ahead in technology at such a sickening rate we have lost our human compassion. Whole countries still starve, die from mal-nutrition and lack of clean drinking water; tribal war, an idea here in first world nations we would laugh at, still persists in many parts of the world. Religious crusades still are apparent in almost every war around the world. If those wars are not religious backed, they are ideologically backed for who's ruling ways are better.

Science, the almighty search for knowledge, has left us with the craving for more knowledge. We dig further down and further up, only if to ignore those already dying nations. Education, proven to aid and bring up the level of well being in third world countries as well as quell the population growth, is provided by religious missionaries. Trillions of dollars are spent on machinery only to kill other human beings each year around the globe. We tear down forests for our petty goods, environments we once claimed as home. We have polluted the oceans with our noisy boats, our radioactive waste and our disgusting sewage systems.

At some point, all the distress we have placed on this planet, and the distress we have ignored from our fellow man will crumble in on us. Technology, the greatest good, has turned out to be one of the greatest evils in the hands of men and women who only wish to exploit for personal gain. We will see this planet destroyed before we see the people of the planet unified, flying under one banner.

We will die, as a species, as a planet. Think of the beauty this planet was bestowed with. Life popped up here, and look out the window. Look at the diversity that has sprung up through the natural expanse of time. I fear not that we as a species will die, but that we destroy this "eden" and the other life that is conscious on it.

I don't know how to wrap this up. The future is simply the future, one can not know it. However, by looking at what we are putting our collective efforts in, shows a pretty bad downhill descent. Looking in the past, we have seen these civilizations climb and then fall. However, never before was the fall a global collapse, this time, it might be a global collapse.

I welcome the end.. the Earth needs to hit the reset button and cleanse away the cancers once more. If the human species survives after that great.. hopefully something from our corrupt histories will survive and warn the surviving generations after of how to live.

I often think about this, actually. For instance, ach time a new building is being built because a bunch of people have spouted out a bunch of kids, and because of this now needs somewere to live as there is simply no place left in any of the older buildings to live in. Or, when another tree in a park gets shopped down, and people throw junk, chewing gums, plastic bags and other junk in the streets by the tons all only because they are too lazy to walk a few feet to the nearby trash can. And so on.

It just cannot possibly end well.
There are simply too many people that are just too stupid to take responsibility for living on a Planet like this, and those that aren't, takes the consequences of the previous ones stupidity.

Ahh but see, the thing is, if we bring the third world up to our quality of life, they will expect it, and we won't be free to plunder their countries for the materials needed to make our gadgets, and we won't have a massive toxic waste dumping ground at our free disposal.

See, our civilization is unsustainable if we attempt to bring everyone to the same level. That's the dirty secret, we can't provide this for everyone, because we'll have to give up our iphones, and have to start dealing with our own waste.

I agree with your rant to an extent, many of us, at least those in control, have lost compassion. Yet, we have protests and groups organizing demanding changes, and some of what you talk about is exactly what they are rallying against.
