Not the old golf course no I don't think I'd be working nights there.

It could be a Gamma Ray burst from Betelgeuse
A quick google shows this star was very active at this time

Interesting theory about betelgeuse but wouldn't a gamma burst have to be really focussed to affect one cloud?

Swamp gas is a possibility, there isn't much in the way of swamps round here though?

From the pictures provided the cloud could be two or three miles long this is only a guess though and being as it was dark you can not see any other cloud cover
So in my opinion a Gamma ray burst is very plausible
Normally with a thread such as this i would say pics or did not happen
But you have photo evidence
As an aside it could be an alien mothership electrifying its mainframe before making the jump to hyperspace but that is way to far out

Now a mothership would be a good catch! I'm not sure what they would want in sleepy NW England though

Was there any noise or sound associated with this cloud
As another thought crossed my mind that it could be a Thunderflash attached to a rocket firework
This would cause this type of illumination in a cloud at night
Or just the Greek Gods playing thunder tag

There was no sound at all. It lingered around for a good while, I was on my break when my colleague and I saw it. We were in the smoking area out back for a good 45 minutes and it was there the whole time.
