Nobody would risk bringing a genuine open flame/torch into one of these caves - they're extremely sensitive environments. They even need to limit the number of people allowed into them every year because the moisture people bring into the cave with them can destroy the paintings. However, in Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams he does try to simulate how it would look artificially.
The painters even often used the contours of the cave and the shape of the rock they were painting on, taking perspective into account.edit on 11-6-2012 by Monger because: (no reason given)
