After the scary first flight of last Wednesday, SS1 has again successfully flown to space, and won the $10m X-Prize competition!
According to Officials the craft exceeded the 62-mile threshold, but a final determination of the altitude will be made later this morning.

MOJAVE, CALIFORNIA – Human flight took a significant step forward today as the privately built SpaceShipOne flew into suborbital space for the second time in five days, apparently securing the $10 million Ansari X Prize.

With pilot Brian Binnie at the controls, SpaceShipOne rocketed to an unofficial height of 368,000 feet after being dropped from its White Knight mothership at a little above 46,000 feet.

The altitude was confirmed by radar while SpaceShipOne was gliding back to Earth. The craft touched down at 11:14 a.m. ET.

Good luck to Burt Rutan and hopefully this is the first step in ending the monopoly on the space program by the govts, particularly the ultimate bureaucratic explorer "NASA"

SpaceShipOne Wins $10 Million Ansari X Prize in Historic 2nd Trip to Space

No problems have been reported during today's flight and SpaceShipOne appeared very stable during the boost to space.

1453 GMT (10:53 a.m. EDT)

The unofficial apogee call is 368,000 feet -- well above the threshold of space to win the X Prize.

1449 GMT (10:49 a.m. EDT)

DROP! SpaceShipOne has separated from the White Knight mothership. Standing by for main engine start.

1349 GMT (9:49 a.m. EDT)

TAKEOFF! SpaceShipOne has departed Mojave airport for today's launch to claim the $10 million X Prize. The tiny craft -- with would-be astronaut Brian Binnie strapped aboard -- will be ferried nearly 50,000 feet above the planet by the White Knight carrier aircraft. In about an hour, SpaceShipOne will be dropped from White Knight to ignite its hybrid rocket engine and blast into space.

This is great, hope it's only the beginning. Was a little nervous watching the ascent, it seemed they had some slight problems keeping level on the roll axis. The wings were dipping up and down a little bit. Glad they pulled it off, though!
