There is no way that the US, the Russians and the Chinese are going to war over Syria. Get real people. Syria simply isn't worth it for any of these
big dogs to tangle.
And whatever anybody thinks all three are big dogs. War isn't just about theoretical power (US would win in a theoretical paper count of assets and
quality). There is the problem of locating assets to the needed locations, supplying them, and replacing them.
The Russians have a beautiful new tank that is probably the equal of the Abrams. Their front line aircraft are modern. A goodly portion of their
military is not up to date and their Navy is no match. Nonetheless, if the rolled onto the battlefield US commanders would be nervous (so would the
Russian commanders). The Chinese can't locate their forces in sufficient strength to be a major player in a Syria conflict. But they could play there
nonetheless.
The Chinese could easily open up a second front somewhere else. That would be a problem and threaten US interests and resources.
Then there is the matter of industrial capacity if the war drags on. China has an advantage in several sectors of industry. It would take the US
atleast a year to catch up to where the Chinese are now in heavy industry. The US certainly has the know how to match anybody in production. It's
simply a matter of building up the infra-structure to what it was 20 years ago. Steel, electronics and some mining would be serious problems for a
minute.
But, that's not all. With china as an adversary we would lose access to many common industrial components such as electrical transformers, pumps, etc.
Would it cripple the US effort? No. IT would be a logistical problem,
We have not experienced total war since WWII. The ultimate abilities of titans like the US, Russia, and China to produce goods, get around seemingly
impossible problems, and innovate new strategy and tactics is mind numbingly scary.
This is all academic. There is no way we are going to war with each other over Syria. Our economies would be wrecked. China and Russia would have
demolished infra-structure since the US would use its' long range interdiction capacity to strike rail, powerplant, factory, hydro dams, ports,
runways, etc in those countries. The ability of China or Russia to do the same to the US homeland is very limited barring nuclear war. I bet they'd
get a piece of us though.
Russia is not unlike the US in education. There is a lot of very smart people there, and a lot more not so smart folks. Just like here. China too, has
a lot of well educated people. Still the US and Russia both lead China in war making smarts.
As a parting note I'd like to mention some things about Chinas supposed fierce war capability. The chinese sub that famously infiltrated a US carrier
formation done so when the US navy wasn't deployed in a war footing. No sona-buoys, also the good sonar is usually left off so the poor whales don't
freak out and run aground.
Chinas ability to hack our critical systems is talked about a lot. It is very concerning. But does anybody seriously think that the US and Russia
aren't just as capable, likely more capable? China has this inferiority complex going where they flaunt their systems and abilities. They like for it
to be known that they have this and can do that. The stealth fighter they unveiled as a political card years before it will be operational is an
example, not to mention their submarine stunt. Russia and the US are old hands at being big dogs and keep their good cards close to their chest. The
stealth chopper that went down in the Bin Laden raid is a good example. No flaunting it. The remote space plane is another. Nobody knew it existed
until it was on the launchpad and couldn't be hidden anymore. What about the two hubble sized space telescopes that were revealed this week when the
NSA gave them to NASA as unneeded surplus?
Even the winner of a total war between these big dogs will be in rough shape. That is why it isn't going to happen over syria. It's all just political
posturing.
