I am no scientist here, but found this article interesting and wanted to share with the members..

Are there any of our more scientific members out there able to translate the possible advances that could take place, should this latest discovery be able to be applied in the current tech world?

Go easy on me, I speak hillbilly

Graphene has caused a lot of excitement among scientists since the extremely strong and thin carbon material was discovered in 2004. Just one atom thick, the honeycomb-shaped material has several remarkable properties combining mechanical toughness with superior electrical and thermal conductivity.

Now a group of scientists at Iowa State University and the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, led by physicist Jigang Wang, has shown that graphene has two other properties that could have applications in high-speed telecommunications devices and laser technology – population inversion of electrons and broadband optical gain.

Next step to the light processor is set. We can already slow down light AND bend it.
By now, all the fibre optics are hooked to electron based chips. So the transfer is at lightspeed but you have use the slow electrons at the endpoints/switching stations. If there is a way to bend light/make it slower/ amplify it, the next step would be taking out those bottlenecks and switch the fibres directly, without the need of slow electrons.

Additionally, graphene could have widespread use in data systems for deep ocean/space travel and exploration seeing as how resilient it is.

Definately a good find, thanks Jack!!!

OK, this maybe way, way out there, but what if the stimulation of Graphene was used to excite Ununpentium? What if Graphene was then used to amplify the particles that were then emitted from the exited Uup?
Here is a link to Albert Stwertka's book. The revised edition from Oxford adds articles on the newly discovered elements, currently called Ununtrium (Uut), Ununpentium (Uup), Ununhexium (Uuh), Ununseptium (Uus), and Ununoctium (Uuo).

This site explains the possibility of how the element 115, Uup, would be used as a superconductor, at room temperature.

Just wait 'til they find out that the "cosmos" is a living processing unit!
Duplicate that with your towel and a couple of mice, Adams!

JacKatMtn, what this means is that it will amplify visible to infra-red light when optically pumped with non-laser light (the electricity a stereo amp uses) and then pumped with a very fast pulse of laser light you want to amplifiy (the audio you want to amplifiy). Too bad it needs an ultra fast laser pump to work though, would have been alot cooler if it worked with steady non-pulsed lasers.

So Bob Lazar was right and element 115 is stable, frankly I am not suprised one bit.
