Watch Live from Nasa

It is so tiny and it look like a mother ship positioning right beside the sun

We have contact! For the last time in 105 years, Earthlings are watching the planet Venus creep across the surface of the sun during a scientifically significant transit that lasts almost seven hours.

The prime viewing zone takes in most of the Americas, the Pacific and Asia, as shown on the map below. But even if you're not in the transit zone itself, you can get in on the action over the Internet, thanks to NASA and more than a dozen other webcasters around the globe. You can watch NASA's coverage above, or choose from the list below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first scientific observation of a Venus transit took place in 1639, and there have five other transits to watch between then and now. Because of the orbital mechanics of our solar system, Venus can be seen crossing the sun's disk from Earth in pairs of occurrences separated by eight years. There are gaps of either 105.5 or 121.5 years between one pair and the next. One transit took place in 2004, and this is the second event in the pair. The next transit won't be seen until the year 2117 — thus, this is the last event of its kind that anyone alive today is likely to see.

Quite a beautiful sighting .. but hard to watch with the naked eye
never been seen in 105 yrs

Could it be a sign .. happening right after the big eclipes on May 20
and right before the big Mayan date on the 21 december

thanks for that op....i really was interested in this...

i watched the queens "sed festival" today.....i went with my flag, watch the boat gloriana....
definatly a solar boat....the way it went down the thames,....just like the pharaohs did down the nile...

then i was thinking about the egyptian religion, and remebered hathor and venus...who is said to pull the solar boat to the horizon each morning....as venus is seen pre dawn.

so we have a solar boat, a sed festival, and venus transit across the solar boat....

i think 2012 is proving alreeady to symbolise a new "time".......

wow and thanx for the op

peace

I am so glad to have been apart of this 'once in a lifetime event'.

A friend and I went and observed the transit at Memphis' Pink Palace Museum...they had telescopes set up for public viewing, but nothing compared to actually watching the transit through solar glasses...

Amazing....

tried to take photos wish I had a decent setup.

Pretty hard to hold three things at once. camera, kids telescope(works not bad), welding shield.

why have they flipped the transit of venus upside down?

From where I am watch it from, its on the bottom of the sun not the top of the sun.

Can someone explain it?

Two possibilities, amrak:

If you are watching it through a kids telescope, it does,nt have the image correcting optics ?

Or, is it just the fact you are viewing from the southern hemisphere..?

Those last 3 words have made me extremely curious.

During that time of transit, do you think that Venus was closer to the Sun?
(Closer than it normally is)?

I was able to view the transit with a special filter on my Telescope, it was really cool looking, I took some pics, but I havent uploaded them to my computer, I'll upload them here in a little bit.

The planet Venus was No closer to the Sun then any other typical day, Its just that Earth and Venus were positioned in the right place, to view Venus crossing the sun. Venus is a very hot planet on any day, and the Atmospheric pressures are mind blowing. Russia sent a probe to Venus in the 60's or 70's cant remember, needless to say it didnt last long, before it was toast
