Standard prominence on the sun. Here is the same one, taken by me last week. It is eruptions from the chromosphere of the sun. They are not visible in white light, but through a Hydrogen-alpha telescope they can be spectacular.

eg. Pic in black and white in th OP; does somewhat resemble that flying Dog thingy from ' the never ending story' ...

Dont use it until you understand that the sun is a diverse entity. It will do alot of stuff that the untrained observer (you) will simply spout out "ALIENS!" to because you dont understand the science and physics at work there.
