Is This Important, Or Is It Really "Just A Test"?

Just heard a "rumor", which someone in Los Angeles or Oakland, California, will be able to verify as soon as June 1, 2012.

It seems that the State will be conducting a "test" at a couple of its tax offices wherein cash will NOT be accepted as a form of payment.

You'll only be allowed to pay your bill using credit/debit cards, checks or money orders.

No more "Legal Tender" greenbacks allowed; at least until the end of the "Test".

So, if you don't have, (or won't use) a credit card, don't have a bank account (no checks or debit card), you'll either have to fork out more money for a cashiers's check, or drive to another city with an office that isn't part of the "test".

Seems a bit unfair to me.

Supposedly it's to increase "safety" (no cash in the office to rob). But that doesn't ring true to me. Afterall, we're talking about a government office, with armed guards on constant patrol; not some quickie-mart or liquor store in the "seedy" part of town.

Now I know, that there have been isolated incidences of retailers going the "No-Cash" route, for similarly stated reasons.

But this is different.

This is the (State) Government saying No Cash Allowed!

Doesn't that give anyone else a cold shiver down the spine?

Doesn't anyone else feel the first disturbingly vertiginous sense of a "Slippery Slope" under their feet?

Awesome thread. Very thought provoking. Hopefully your responses are more stimulating than your original thoughts.

Are you implying that the government is doing this to forestall a run on banks here?

California is the most populous state in the US.

If this "Test" is "Successful" (they haven't defined the parameters of "success" or failure") it could serve as the basis of the policy being adopted State-wide at all state offices collecting taxes and/or fees.

Once a "No Cash" policy is accepted by the State government, especially in a state as large as California, it is but a short step (or Slip down the Slope) to cash being banned for All transactions.

When your personal wealth is nothing but a series of electronic bits and bytes, it doesn't take much to make you completely penniless.

And completely trackable by your government.
