What a complete waste of space you are. Speaking as an atheist that you are, I would have thought you could have done better.

I think he did great. But you are an easy target.

Dr. Owen Flanagan's book "The Problem Of The Soul" pretty much settles the case about the subject.

In The Problem of the Soul, Owen Flanagan, professor of philosophy, psychology, and brain sciences at Duke University, takes the unpopular position that all this is wrong. There is a conflict at the deepest level, he says, between traditional mind-body dualism and the scientific truth about the self, which is that we are entirely physical animals, inseparable from the natural world. He wants us to reconcile this conflict by abandoning supernatural conceptions of ourselves and replacing them with a better, naturalized image that finally gets the facts right after centuries of misdirection about the soul.

I am sure you do find being homosexual is repulsive.

I was personally repulsed when a couple of heterosexual friends stayed over, to point of making a making a subtle statement with and egg whisk in one hand, beating a couple of eggs in a bowl the next morning, whilst smiling at them. They got the message, and I told them I Love them (as I do), and they respectfully have refrained from such activity when they stay over out of respect for me, just as when I had a partner, we chose to refrain from such activity out of respect for our hosts.

Just because someone tells me they are straight, I never feel the need to play a heterosexual porn movie in my head.

1. "in some form": Going into heaven "in some form" is not the same as trying to prove a separate existence of the soul form the body in the here and now. It's one of the steps right before it. But, if you see it as all one and the same, fine by me, didn't change much--but no, it didn't do it for me.

2. As if it were "Science" TM. I was talking about it as if a logic-bound person could even begin to take it seriously, how they'd wind up having to approach it. But the book itself was written by a scientist applying scientific principles to a concept.

3.But I will connect the dots on this one--just in case you didn't catch it. (I think you might have.) If the spirit (mind, whatever) is not derived from chemical chain reactions, then the life of, or lack thereof, in that body does not dictate the beginning or end of the mind. The guy in question went in to prove that the mind is caused by the body because if the body was not the source of the mind (spirit) then WHO was? I was approaching it from the other side: If the mind is not subjugated to the body, then the mind is autonomous from the body's death, therefore there could be a soul to send somewhere in the first place. Right now the general assumption is that the mind is a derivative of the body, through Evolution.

Anyway, 600+ freaking pages. Most folks won't read more than a couple of paragraphs. Put it this way, I read an excerpt form it when I was much younger--I've not been through the whole thing, and I like text books.

Re: What?

On the subject of Moral Licensing: specifically, the wow, great deflection. I misread that one, totally. That deserved a what. What I thought you were responding to was an attack on you with a comment about your kid. My bad, on that one. It would have been a really well done deflection, otherwise, almost worth noting the pattern. And it's what I get for reading more than 1 page of junk at a time.

Instead, it was a tongue in cheek comment. Still not bad, almost cheerful. But: the moral licensing thing still stands. No matter how well a kid is raised, no matter how much good they do, they have wiring that would cause them to indulge when they've been particularly good. And a lot of people do that, here, there, etc.

Now this part:

By the way, if you are sure you're not doing "bad" by your own standard (how you measure your own "enemy" for their failures), AND if you want to be a better person (everyone, no matter faith or not should be striving for this), AND you've never heard of this before, it's time to start digging through your motives. That's a lot of "if"s and "co-conditions"--and not like I know if you meet them all.
This is basically a nested if-then statement. It was mainly posted in way of possible "self-application" of containing the natural tendency of Moral Licensing. Although YOU was used, it actually wasn't directed solely at you until the last bit, behind the "--". Probably should have used "one" instead of "you". Makes the fact that it's a generalization stand out more, I guess.

And the pro-gun comment? I sincerely hope you are pro-gun or at least don't use the argument that guns kill people because it could be seen as highly ironic in your comment, there. Kind of caused me to wince, that correlation.

Glad someone else is pointing this out. Can you elaborate more on your opinion of this?

One of the concepts I draw from it is if a person is going to judge others on the basis of say Leviticus and scream at others they will burn in hell for the abomination of being homosexual, will they not be judged by the whole of Leviticus? (shellfish, pig skin, trimming the beard, poor eyesight, more than one crop in the same field, clothing of two different materials, all that stuff). Or they may be judged by each and every thing in the bible that speaks of an "abomination" (unclean things, idols, customs of men, cheating, a proud look, a lying tongue, sower of discord, proud heart, divorce, remarriage, adultry, violence, breaking vows...too many to list them all).
If people are going to judge others based on a single verse pulled out of context, will they be judged in the same way?
It's just nice to see someone else who "gets it" in that way.... looking forward to your response, hope maybe it can help others see the logic in it.

That's not the first step. First step is proving to people that spirits live outside the body's control.

Really, "some form" doesn't do it for you? Anyway, why would one even talk about religion in specific terms as if it is a science? One simply needs to prove that consciousness is sustained after death. I think it's stated that if the person follows the instructions, the experience will be immensely pleasant and eternal. I'd like to see some proof that this happens. I would imagine the science behind this to be fairly complicated. If this is proven to be the case, I would postulate that this life becomes relatively insignificant in comparison.

As for the rest of your comments on my behavior, what?

My mother used to get somewhat philosophical... Her take on it was to live as though there is no tomorrow, but put a little back just in case there is.
She also spoke of this somewhat. She told us that this may be all that there is, there may not be an afterlife at all and none of this will have mattered...but then, what if there was? Even though we don't know for sure, it's good to prepare just in case there is. Either way, it's a win/win situation. If there is one, we are in good standing and will hopefully be on the "good list" and if there isn't, then we have led a good life and helped others and they will carry us on in their memories. We can die knowing we have made a difference to someone, somewhere.
I do sincerely hope she is in heaven now, chatting it up with God. It gives me peace thinking she is.

I don't feel that I'm doing "good", other than trying to persuade people through the internet to go my way. I don't have the money nor the numbers to do a lot of "good". What I consider good is a socialist utopia. I think religion is not helping us get there, as it puts emphasis on another life and thus lessens the importance of our only life. It takes away the urgency. The fables paint us as separate personalities. I think they keep us apart.

I am aware that I have divided us as well. I'm aware that I'm even saying it's not too late to come over to my way of thinking. However, I see mine as a way of almost effortless pleasure. I think their way is suffering and charity. My definition of "good" is liberation. I can't tell what theirs is.

And now for something completely different. Guns? I like to hit targets with weapons. It's just about hitting the target.

What if the brain is replicated, teleported, and kept alive? This is what I'm looking for. I want to know how consciousness survives after death.

In case you think I'm being daft, I'm not asking about a soul. If someone wants to include this in the process, I'll be happy to read about how this soul is created at the time of death or is always with a person. Maybe consciousness is transferred to this soul? I don't know if there has to be a soul. That's why I asked the question I did. To say that there is no soul and therefore no heaven, leaves out other mechanisms someone may have scientific proof of. If you're trying to prove to me that consciousness is physical, I wonder why you're preaching to the choir. That's all.

I'm aghast that people would actually think it's ok to brainwash a 4 year old into hating gay people.
And then they all cheer the kid singing the song.

If the kid were saying Jews or Blacks weren't getting into heaven they would be called anti semites or al sharpton would be protesting.
But since it's gay people getting discriminated against no one says anything.
I'm getting sick of people gay bashing.

Funny, cute vid.

There is no proof the bible was even written by a god or people who were 'touched by god'. In fact, it's just like any old storybook, except it got a bit too much hype.

Same with the Qur'an.

Let's not forget that christianity's stories copy off of many, many pagan and polytheist religions. Look up Mithra, you'll find a great many similarities.

You know what, when Jesus died on the cross, he said, "Father, Forgive them, they know not what they do."

I can imagine him talking to God after he ascended to Heaven having a conversation that goes something like this:

"You know what Father, Forgive them, for they are all stark raving mad! All they seem to do is preoccupy themselves with being better than each other, tearing strips off each other, accusing each other, blaming each other, killing each other, hating each other. That Satan is running the place like a circus down there!!!"

God says, "Ah yes, that is why I sent you. I chose you to show them the way of Love, after all, you are the Prince of peace, and once they figure out that they have only ever had themselves to blame, they will get their act together, turn from their wickedness and truly Live, it is then and only then, that they will know what this is all about."

Jesus, "Tell me about it! However I did meet some good people down there that actually had some real humility and Love for one another, and were able to put aside their prejudices, and see the fact that the only way forward was the way, the truth and the life! After all, I told them that I wanted them to have life, and have it in abundance."

God, "Well, as promised, I have sent my Holy Spirit to your apostles, and the work has begun. So with each successive generation in time, it'll get better."

So before long, all the rules were being broken!

First it was Gentiles getting saved (how dreadfully controversial for the Jews!!!). So it was for many generations, all manner of rules seemed to be getting "broken", so many controversies!!!

And then came 2012, God insisted it was time for the homosexuals to be sorted out.

God, "They have suffered far too long, in this world to be left behind, and cursed with all manner of evil from those that really think they cannot be saved! They love each other as much and as less as anyone else in the world does. But because they Love one another, they are doing my will, and I will bless them for that."

Jesus smiled looking down, and said, thank you Father, "IT GETS BETTER! It gets better all the time."

When time was over, and all good things had been blessed by God, that remained in his spirit of Love, Jesus asked him, "So what do we do with the rest of them that are busy throwing stones at each other, and everyone else?"

God said, throw them in the pit and be done with them, for they rejected you, and have in turn rejected me. Let them live in their own filth. They will not know peace."

Jesus, "What about that old serpent Satan?"

God, "The pit for him also, for he was the instigator of this almighty mess in the first place."

Jesus, "What about the rest of them? The ones that played it safe?"

God, "Let them remain on the Earth, send down your Kingdom as an example to them, so that they can see with their own eyes the Glory of my handiwork. Let them come!"

Jesus, did as he was commanded, "He gazed upon the new Heaven and Earth, and exclaimed - It Just Keeps Getting Better!"

So the moral of my "Story" is:

Just ignore all the crap the world will throw at you. So long as you remain strong in your Love for yourselves and each other, and stand up for what is TRUE, then there is nothing the world can do to you! What is more: God will always redeem those that live in the spirit of Truth and Love.

I thought about doing that, but then read the disclaimer thing on the rivals list: "These are the ATS members who often disagree with me, but challenge me to think harder and push myself to learn more in my quest to deny ignorance.."
That made me decide they weren't worth being put there as they don't challenge me to think harder, they're just "idiots" and make me want to push them off a dock somewhere.
I do have one listed as a rival but that's only because his user name is rival and I kinda like the guy

now if they make a list called "idiots who don't deserve to share my oxygen", I'll have a LOT to put on there!!!
