both games and porn are rife with hypnotic suggestion symbols and techniques

take the swirl that is associated with hypnotism for example ...you will find it all through porn, and cartoons, and on nutrisweet as the logo, there is all sorts of NLP going on too

using sexual pleausure as an hypnotic anchor is one of the most potent hypnotic techniques there is.

not to mention the brainwave states entrainment creates

We should have more sex/strip/massage places so we can see the ladies in person and not on the net. Tell big brother to stop regulating what people really want to do and it would slow people down from doing them in private.

I call this evolution..and ya, all new states start off with the former worried about this change...thing is though, this isnt some random mutation..it is a purposeful march towards a quite literal new way of thinking.

That to me is a much more interesting development to discuss...one could make the argument that gaming, internet, etc is actually some sort of evolutionary guided intelligence that is elevating our species without us even fully aware (unless you connect the dots).

So now I guess that begs the question: is this all the result of chance or was there intelligent design behind it all.

Here's an example post of someone who's never had a Psychology class in their life.

I thought ATS was about denying ignorance?

Actually, I am human, and not an inanimate object known as a "douchebag".

If you're going to try to insult me, please use species-specific terms. I might actually care, then. Probably not, though, because I've already been called every name in the book... twice.

By all means, keep your star. I have no interest in "stars" anyway, especially when they are coming from extremely judgmental people who know absolutely nothing about me as a person.

Also, you might try reading ahead to my next post (www.abovetopsecret.com...) after ErroneousDylan's expression of disappointment, wherein I explain my actual stance.

Funny thing, i can go play video games, be upto my neck in beheadings, shooting innocent people for the hell of it, etc, and i have NEVER once felt the urge to do this when i have returned to reality.

I hate this blame the video games argument and everything it stands for. People are responsible for their own actions.

I mostly agree with that, even if it comes from CNN.

I play RPG games on and off, as my time and responsibilities allow me, and I am aware how easily they can screw my view of life. They are addictive like hell. I have weekends, maybe once in a month, when I do nothing but "indulging" myself in gaming; after that I can tell you that for a few days real life seems so dull and heavy; people around me, who obviously didn't participate in that "triple EXP weekend event" are noobs who don't have a clue of what they've lost, and generally all I want is to get back to my wonderful fantasy.
My mood change; I am irritable, restless, and lack patience; sometimes I'm in awe of how something so enjoyable can make me feel so awful after that.
But I'm a 40 years old, mature person and I get out of those moods pretty fast. If I know I have only one or two hours available for gaming I don't even get close to the game, because I know I will end up giving up everything else for that day and keep playing like mad. So I'll rather read something interesting or browse ATS.

On the other side all those kids playing out there have no discipline, and no taste of real life yet; and they don't feel they give up something. But they are giving up almost everything for that gaming experience. And they are irritable, restless and angry with everything around them. Yet, I don't think that the damage is permanent; one month without computer and the person gets back to normal; I've seen it with my kids; the PC crashed, and I let it intentionally that way. They even started to read books...

As for the porn, I have no interest in it; I prefer the real thing, it's much better. I've seen some relationships ruined because of it, and I imagine it's also addictive, so I'm not going to exchange a healthy relationship for a virtual surrogate.

Take out the word gaming and replace it with "porn" and your statement holds water for someone like myself who uses porn regularly. The circumstances are no different. And no, I'm not an unattractive guy. I've dated some very attractive women in my life. However, I do suffer from anxiety and depression and porn (in many ways) is better than sex because of the fantasy, newness, and freedom associated with it to the point real sex just does not do it for me anymore.

Porn as an addiction is debatable in the Psychological community. Some consider it a component of OCD but others consider it an addiction because of the very same chemicals that are triggered by many narcotics. When I speak of it being an addiction, I speak of men and women who lose themselves for hours (if not days) on end, masturbating. It's very dysfunctional. It is more than just habitual I think because withdrawal is a real bitch, which leads to headaches and strong cravings after a day or two of abstaining, similar to suffering a drug addiction or any other chemical dependency.

Then I checked out the link and it was pretty informative. I never knew everybody used that term incorrectly nowadays.

Thanks for enlightening me.

No problem. I didn't mean to sound like a dick. I did think by the OP that you'd appreciate it.

Researchers are worried about the effects that video games and internet porn have on the brains of men. They believe they create an addiction to novelty while distancing people from real life, person to person encounters.

So they counter the above statement with "Bath-salt" and "experimental '___'" and cause ppl to eat other ppl...

Yeah, I imagined it's like that.

The good news is that, just like with the games, the porn addiction can be broken. I remember I found once a site dedicated to this problem, and among other various things, they recommended a period of complete abstinence, to "reboot" the brain wiring related to sexual satisfaction.
Gaming still remains for me a way to enjoyable spend my free time, and I dwell somehow at the border between playing and addiction (where I can't live without it). And as long as it stays that way I'm fine. I can say that even if I will never play again in my entire life, the quality of my life will not diminish.
Porn goes deeper than just a few pleasurable hours; it stays with you long, long after you think you're done, and it will greatly reduce the quality of normal sex with a real person. So because of its potential to mess your real life, your relationships, your intimacy with your loved one, I am very cautious about it.
I hope for you to find one day someone to love so much and feel so good with, that will make all the porn in the world unworthy of losing the real thing.

Not everyone has the same perception of reality. I think the article should describe the researchers view of reality. If video games makes me go away from the world full of scum (I'm talking about this physical reality) and helps me to get into a completely new world, I'm very much happy with that. I think research should be done on people to tend to think that this life they live is real and how it affects their brain.

Didn't CNN make 3 other reports basically calling men losers? To me that's starting a gender war much like how they like to start race wars. Media is always trying to get people to turn on each other with these false studies.

Men if you like your video games and porn there is nothing wrong with you. IGNORE CNN!

This article is obviously written from a conventional point of view. It talks of living in the present moment like thats a bad thing. What, I should obsess about my past and worry about my future? Everything in our society and life is just a big game anyways, including the game of obtaining friends, girlfriends, wives, children. People take it all too seriously. "This is real life" "Im an adult". Look how serious everyone is!

People need to relax, they need to get into the present moment, not try to stay out of it. It doesn't matter if you spend your time playing a video game or playing a game at your work to get a promotion so you can buy a new car. Neither thing is more real than the other, both are temporary and transient, both things- the car and the items/levels in a game will someday be obsolete. They will fade, die, be destroyed, or newer better ones will come out.

The real game is being played in your head, by your mind, and its all equally a fantasy.

Id have to agree with you OP but more on video games than porn.
