Researchers are worried about the effects that video games and internet porn have on the brains of men. They believe they create an addiction to novelty while distancing people from real life, person to person encounters.

'The Demise of Guys': How video games and porn are ruining a generation

Video game and porn addictions are different. They are "arousal addictions," where the attraction is in the novelty, the variety or the surprise factor of the content. Sameness is soon habituated; newness heightens excitement. In traditional drug arousal, conversely, addicts want more of the same coc aine or heroin or favorite food.

The consequences could be dramatic: The excessive use of video games and online porn in pursuit of the next thing is creating a generation of risk-averse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment.

This new kind of human addictive arousal traps users into an expanded present hedonistic time zone. Past and future are distant and remote as the present moment expands to dominate everything. That present scene is totally dynamic, with images changing constantly.

A recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that "regular porn users are more likely to report depression and poor physical health than nonusers are. ... The reason is that porn may start a cycle of isolation. ... Porn may become a substitute for healthy face-to-face interactions, social or sexual."

Similarly, video games also go wrong when the person playing them is desensitized to reality and real-life interactions with others.

Violence in video games is often synonymous with success. Children with more of a propensity for aggression are more attracted to violent video media, but violent media, in turn, can also make them more aggressive. This could be related to the fact that most video games reward players for violent acts, often permitting them to move to the next level in a game.

CNN

It makes you wonder what type of society is being engineered through the use of these mediums. Creating a generation that fears commitment and holds no strong interpersonal relationships while craving new things and desensitized to violence, to the point where they associate violence with rewards in the gaming world.

Sounds like the makings of a perfect soldier for the oppression of their fellow men; people who feel no family or personal attachments while reveling in the power that using violence to oppress the public gives them. With soldiers like that, do you really think they won't turn their guns against their own friends and families in their home towns?

All the pieces are falling into place for the New World Order.

What about the effects to women? I'm more curious to see if these have the same effect to either sex.

While I agree to some point, at the same time I disagree.

I have formed some seriously strong friendships online in these games that in person can get to distracted by other things relative to that physical interaction that may lead to other pursuits.

And with Porn, we did have Magazines and VHS / Reel to Reel before the internet. Not to mention a little game I used to play as a kid, called war ( not the card game, simulated battle ( from a kid's perspective ) )

What's gonna destroy society is social networking, you are taking the work out of interacting to receive the information of your friends in the 1st place, totally erasing the need to " hang out " and only do events or not pending various texts or emails to friends in said person's list.

People don't know how to talk to others anymore, and manners have fallen short long ago with common sense.

Video games have already been studied and have nothing but positive results.
Why video games makes you smarter
CNN Article about the same
I could list a thousand different links..catagorically undeniable...video games = awesome hobby if you want to intellectually grow.

Compare that with the alternative "downtime" of watching television (proven to dumb you down) and its a no brainer which to choose (no pun intended).

Porn..meh, I don't see a 10 minute session a day being an issue...problems come when you let anything take over your life. Viewing porn for a purpose is one thing, using porn as a replacement for a girlfriend is another...so watch the addiction. And if the discussion is for underage folks looking at porn, well, thats a problem. Parents need to be active in their childs life, try to limit their access, but also realize the kid is going to see some out there anyhow, so try and have a very open and honest discussion often with the little dudes so they don't become obsessed with the taboo stuff their parents never speak of.

ditto, and this rudeness includes wearing your pajamas to go shopping. get dressed for god's sake. about video games; i think it is how you allow yourself to be or not be. I have made over seas friends because of playing fighting (sports) games on-line. we would have never had the opportunity to speak if it were not for on-line gaming. I always tell them we are just average people trying to get along and enjoy our life according to our perspective of happiness. we have great conversations, it's like having a real time pen pal.

Those are great links, thanks for posting them.

I think what this article is trying to bring out is how addiction to porn and video games differs from other types of addictions.

Increasingly, researchers say yes, as young men become hooked on arousal, sacrificing their schoolwork and relationships in the pursuit of getting a tech-based buzz.

Every compulsive gambler, alcoholic or drug addict will tell you that they want increasingly more of a game or drink or drug in order to get the same quality of buzz.

I know from first hand experience that video games and porn can be addicting. I can remember whole days wasted in front of a video game where time seems to disappear and nothing constructive gets done because I had to get past "just one more level".

While I can see how gaming can help with brain development, I think the addiction aspect of gaming is still very worrying. How many people can really say they're only gonna play for only one hour and then get some housework done?

I thought I was going to need to throw down some knowledge on the OP but I saw you did my light work. Yeah, gaming is an art form and, just like all new mediums in the past, society just needs to wait for certain generations to die of old age before it gets the full recognition and respect it deserves.

Television was viewed the same way until the people born in the 1800's finally died. Now there are national art film awards celebrated universally by every demographic.

As far as porn... throwing it in with digital games and only including men really illustrates how backwards and culturally-stunted the OP point really is.

From what I understand about women (which admittedly isn't much), they aren't affected by visual stimulation in the same way as men are and they look more for the emotional impact of relationships.

As for why they aren't affected by video games the same way men are, that is a mystery the world may never solve.

When you overindulge in pretty much any activity it can mess with your brain. The key here is moderation and discipline. Video games do not mess with your mind any more than watching TV or playing board games - it's if you begin to get obsessed and addicted to them that you might develop a psychological/mental problem. As for porn, yes the threshold for addiction and dependence might be a lot lower because the desire for sex is a basic human need, but it still will only be a problem if you overindulge. There is nothing wrong with either in moderation.

Well, I won't even do this study the honors of putting the two in the same catagory..porn can be debated back and forth, but the benefits of gaming far outweighs not doing the dishes (generally speaking).

So, gaming
Its creating a new way for the brain to think..no more analog style past/present/future linear 2d thinking. it is in fact creating a new method of connecting that allows sort of parellel dimensional thinking..removal of boundries to allow new possibilities without the rigid constraints of our general biological understanding.

Consider that for a second..do you find it just coincidence that we have entered into a time where quantum physics is being developed, with all its newfound potentials, and its non-analog nature..and at the same time, we find a tool that starts rewiring our brains to think along the same methods...

I call this evolution..and ya, all new states start off with the former worried about this change...thing is though, this isnt some random mutation..it is a purposeful march towards a quite literal new way of thinking.

That to me is a much more interesting development to discuss...one could make the argument that gaming, internet, etc is actually some sort of evolutionary guided intelligence that is elevating our species without us even fully aware (unless you connect the dots).

Another aspect.the mindset used to be..you must do a task, then once it is completed, you will recieve a reward..now it is, doing the task is the reward..there is no waiting, but you must continue doing it. Working on various areas achieves more reward sensation..and the more openings you have, the more brainpower you are using, the more rewards you instantly get.

So now I guess that begs the question: is this all the result of chance or was there intelligent design behind it all.
