On the surface, you cannot argue with Chaplin's words...or can you if they are put into context. Then it is a very clever manipulation except for
one image inserted behind the one word "Promise,"and the final emphasis on the word "Change."
I sense the wind that blows the words of "Promise" and "Change" about us in the air these days. The smell is offensive, tainted--no, created--by
long-harbored hate of anything and everything that has stood before. The spirit of this new wind is not honest. In the final analysis it is the same
shout of the most blood-thirsty radical, "Tear it ALL down!"
We need to aspire to something even better.
