Coming Collision: NASA Press Conference To Predict Major Cosmic Event To Affect Our Entire Galaxy An

How 'bout holding a conference to predict the arrival of Planet X instead? Or how about; how many stars our solar system REALLY has? Or how about a little chat on whether or not our Moon is ours? Or..... what really caused the asteroid belt debris?
I mean....I can think of a thousand better things to conference about other than what might happen millions of years from now!

This is the most arrogant conference I've ever heard of! Who cares and how does it help, effect or involve us now?. Don't they have better things to spend OUR money on other than to wager bets on which millennium this might happen in?

A cosmic collision is coming our way. The Milky Way will collide with Andromeda, but it won't happened for another 3-billion years. If the collision occurs, the galaxies will likely merge into one larger galaxy. Various names have been proposed for the resulting merged galaxy, the most dominant being Milkomeda.

NASA will host a Science Update Thursday, May 31, at 1:00 p.m. EDT to discuss new Hubble Space Telescope observations that allow astronomers to predict with certainty the next major cosmic event to affect our entire galaxy, sun, and solar system.

The news conference will be held in NASA Headquarters' James E. Webb Auditorium at 300 E St. SW in Washington and be shown live on NASA Television and on the agency's website.

It has been known for a long time that the Andromeda galaxy is approaching us. Because of uncertainties in Andromeda's motion, it has not been possible to determine whether the Milky Way will have a head-on collision or glancing blow with the neighboring galaxy billions of years in the future. Hubble's precise observations will settle this question.

Galaxies have a dynamical side. They have close encounters that sometimes end in grand mergers and overflowing sites of new star birth as the colliding galaxies morph into wondrous new shapes.

I find it funny they want to name it afterwards. Like it will just merge and this tiny rock will still be here.

I`m totally with the OP on this who cares? And besides they first said there is no water anywhere but now find it`s everywhere. Funny we even listen to what they think till it is actually discovered.

All these press conferences are is they need attention and hardly ever give any info worth having. Besides I think they are wrong a Black hole will stop this from happening and possibly even one we create.

Well first off there needs to be evidence that Planet X even exists. There is no reason to comment on how many stars are in our solar system, but the answer is one unless you know something we don't. As for the moon, really...

The asteroid belt formed from the primordial solar nebula as a group of planetesimals, the smaller precursors of the planets, which in turn formed protoplanets. Between Mars and Jupiter, however, gravitational perturbations from the giant planet imbued the protoplanets with too much orbital energy for them to accrete into a planet. Collisions became too violent, and instead of fusing together, the planetesimals and most of the protoplanets shattered. As a result, most of the asteroid belt's mass has been lost since the formation of the Solar System. Some fragments can eventually find their way into the inner Solar System, leading to meteorite impacts with the inner planets. The asteroid belt began its formation in the same way that the rest of the planets in our solar system formed. Soon after the Sun had formed, energy was injected into the surrounding gas and dust leftover from original solar nebula. It began to clump together during collisions to form planetesmals - larger and larger chunks of rock and metal.

With the discovery of super-massive black holes at the center of virtually every galaxy, I would wager that the merging could be quite active! Somewhat like anti-matter/matter self annihilation! The possibilities of the outcome are staggering!

About Planet X....they have hinted so much lately that there's SOMETHING lurking in the outer reaches in the Kuiper belt or Oort cloud or wherever else that's unreachable so, what evidence would you like?

It is a SCIENCE update, regarding one of MANY areas of research in astronomy.
They do this every now and then, it's one of the ways "scientoids" communicate with each other.
What does this have to do with planet x, or even the asteroid belt???
It's NOT about that, they have science updates for things like NEOs of interest, but THIS specific one is about us bumping into andromeda.
Astronomy is a beatiful science, why not enjoy it?

Don't get me wrong there are MANY things about Nasa (as an institution) that I object, but there's also a lot of people doing damn good science over there, it'd be smart to take advantage of that.

You do realize that the field of Astronomy is very diverse, yes? That there are many different kinds of astronomers that specialize in different fields? An astronomer that is a planetologist is going to specialize in planetary evolution, but that does not make them an expert in galactic astronomy.

You are right that a collision with the Andramada galaxy is something that is in the far off future, and how does that help / affect us now?
Well, our galaxy, the Milk Way, is a eater of galaxies. We know that it has had collisions in the past with other galaxies and has grown in size because of that.
When these collisions happen, it's possible for another star system to pass close to our star system, for planets in those systems to get ejected, and become rogue planets......

Aren't you one of those Planet X / Niburu believers? Wouldn't you want this to be understood better, so that professional astronomers might learn something that may actually support your cause?

Astronomers have been looking for years in the skies for things. So far they've not found any conclusive evidence that supports another star as a companion to our sun. Each time they put even better equipment in orbit to try and find all sorts of things, and the hopes of finding something like that get's busted. What else do you want them to do? They ARE looking. They just have not found anything. Sorry that's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth.

I see the asteroid belt has been explained to you. If you don't like the accepted view of how they originated, then become an astronomer yourself, with a degree, and prove them wrong.

Same goes for the moon. If you don't agree with modern astronomy's accepted theories, then again, go to school, become and astronomer yourself, and prove those theories wrong (or right).

What I find arrogant is you dictating what astronomers should or should not be studying, when you're not even a amateur astronomer yourself!

And as for you photo's of a nebula (yes that is what it is), how can anyone take an idiot like that guy on 32 degree's seriously?

As the universe expands galaxies travel in straight lines not eliptical paths hence ........ get ready for this ( it's a real ground shaker ) no collision !!! This whole "event" is probably someones last ditch effort to maintain funding .ex. "hey, so johnson What have you found out with the 30 million dollars and thousands of man hours of work your department has consumed?" " Ummmm, Ummmmm, Ummmmmm, In billions of years from now our galaxy will collide with the andromada galaxy to fourm a new one??????" I DO NOT Understand why you need something INSTEAD of this.....
Galactic dynamics is a pretty important part of Astronomy, why wouldn't they dedicate time and effort to it, given they are ASTRONOMERS...?
(and more so, this astronomers specialize in the study of Galaxies, it'd be pretty dumb to ask them to study "the asteroid belt" when there are other astronomers that specialize in that)

The first thing that comes to my mind is:

about to go Super Nova, Time Scale of the event, coming up in 1 second to 1,000+ years.

Other than that, I agree, other than studying and calculating the time when something may happen, it's like a complete waste of time to waste BRAIN ENERGY to think about what happens when humans are gone or colonized another planet because this one will have become a wasteland in a time which even a quarter of that time humans won't reach, unless helped from outside.

I do NOT think long-term as life is too short for thinking even decades ahead yet alone billions of years.

So, who gave you that image and told you it was "planet X," eh? The cropping on your version is entirely different than the versions on the "before its news" link, so where did you get yours?
