A state in India has a novel idea of how to protect endangered tigers from poachers: Kill the poachers! The Western Indian state of Maharashtra now allows forest guards to shoot poachers on sight. They will also send more rangers into forests and offer covert payments to informers in attempts to curb the killings. India is home to nearly half of the world's tiger population, and poaching remains a serious problem there: 14 tigers have been killed this year, more than all of 2011, with eight dying in Maharashtra.

I approve of this policy. Poachers are killing endangered species just for money and nothing could be worse than that. I think this should be a universal policy in dealing with poachers. Perhaps some bounty or reward should be offered as well.

These poachers not just attack tigers but leopards peacocks and thousands of other animals just for the sake of money. There are only 3,200 Bengal tigers left in the world. Maharashtra is following in the footsteps of the state of Assam. It instituted a shoot on sight anti-poaching policy in Kaziranga National Park years ago. As a result it has the world's highest density of tigers. (S)

I'm delighted to announce:
POACHER SEASON NOW OPEN! HUNTERS WELCOME!

While I do not disagree, I am sure the human rights extremists would have something to say about this.

In a way it's kinda strange. In large parts of Africa it is standard policy to forcibly tackle poachers. Try it in a National Park in say Zimbabwe, Botswana and probably South Africa too and they will shoot you on sight with no warning. I know because they all told me this when I visited various parks (with the exception of SA). "Do not leave the Jeep and/or the group/guide, ever."

As for human rights, what about animal rights?

Personally I think you have a great idea right there. Live by the sword die by the sword.

Plus, I think it sends a good message to the animals that not all humans are dicks who kill for indulgence.

Personally, I've felt it should be open season on poachers for a long time.

Good for India.

while i agree tha persons convicted of poaching should be executed - there is something missing hear ,

due process

the problem with such summary " justice " is not only that the entire irreversible process depends on what one person thinks he sees though his weapons sight

it is open to rampant abuse - shoot any-one , laberl them " a poacher " , you not only have murdered the person you want rid off - you get a reward for it too

If we were a civilized species, the tigers wouldn't have a thing to worry about.

Good job India!
