Giant and awesome it is, After a ship ran aground on it's Native island the rats that escaped ate these guys into extinction, or so it was thought.
They were rediscovered on a neighbouring island, and only in one place, on a bush, where the rats had not been able to reach them.

The Lord Howe Island stick insect, which you see hatching above, looking like an alien struggling out of a human torso, will grow to the size of your hand. It’s also called a “tree lobster” — that’s how big it is.

A link to the article which also shows one of these guys hatching is well worth a click and 7 minutes of your life marvelling at how utterly brilliant, and, resilient nature can be.

Tree Lobster hatching.
